What is semi-retired?

The "is it enough" thread got me thinking...

I've been taking an extended hiatus each year since I was the 32 (now 36). Each year I add a month. The plan is to work 6-on 6-off by next year.

Given my calculations, I will still need to work, but in this limited capacity, until 53 or so before I can fully retire.

Can I consider my self semi-retired?

I consider myself semi-retired now. When I turned 60 I dialed my work week down to about 40 hours. I'm one of those lazy, selfish baby-boomers the younger generations keeps complaining about.
Based on the current double standard:
20 to 50 year old - 20 hrs a week = semi retired
50-65 year old - 40 hrs a week = slacker

Semi retired is when you work less at what you did before. I'm semi retired. I work, but on a limited schedule doing small home improvement projects. Not my choice, it's what the economy handed me.

Things are getting better. I may be "out of retirement" some time this year. But, I don't look for work, it finds me after 40 years.

That's pretty good. But, seriously, you're not semi retired. You're just working smarter.

I'm retired, but like I've said before, I can relate to those who I've heard over the years say, "I don't know how I had time to work before I retired." To me, semi retired would be someone who chooses to work to make $ when they want to and doesn't work to make $ when they don't feel like it, and the $ is just extra income. If you are working on a regular basis, you aren't retired. You may be just working "part time."

It's all relative.

Father worked his ass of so he could retire early and play with his cars all day.

My Mom's family does not know how to not work.

Omi ran her business every day till she was 80 something and only gave it up for health reasons.

My mom has been retired for 10 years or so but works 10-12 hours a day 6 days a week doing Main Street Redevelopments.

Most of my life I've worked two jobs (not true, but sounds good) so as soon as I hit 45 no job. I bought some properties so live off the rents. My income is a bit more than twice what it was when I was a fairly low level computer/LAN tech.

I still work, but for myself. I don't start until 10:00 and finsih by 2:00. That's unless it's a nice day then I go to the beach instead. I don't have kids so I haven't needed to be finacially responsible, by this I mean I've taken big risks that have paid off.

My definition of semi-retired is when you work because you want to not because you have to.

I'm a management consultant -- all legit.

I have a mortgage (reasonable), utilities and sometimes (but rarely) a car payment, no other debts. I do fully fund my investments, and I've had a few deals go right so far...

I guess I'm closer to part time, that semi retired, as I still have to work to buy my time.

To me, success is being able to work when you want, if you want, doing what you want...

My view of semi-retired is when after working at a job you have to do to earn a living you retire from that situation:

You may or may not start to draw retirement at that time.
You may or may not live on investments.

You do work, at what you want to do not what you have to.
It could be making money on a hobby.
It could be doing something you always wanted to do but could not previously because of the need to make a living.

In my case the company I worked for offered an early retirement in 1999 that was so good that it would have taken continuing to work for 9 years to equal taking the offer. A "no brainier".

At 50 I was not ready to sit on the back porch sipping an adult beverage.

A friend and I formed a team and went racing in World Challenge and Grand AM. We did that for 5 years. I then helped our 2 crew chiefs start a business with another crew chief from another team. We now have 3 operating companies, a real estate entity and a management Corp.
I am having fun doing something I do not feel like is work and it is Porsche related.

What makes it semi-retired is that I do not need to do it either for the income or the continuation of the business. I do it because I like it and want to. It is like getting paid for what I would do without getting paid.
