Guys, if I convert UK prices (for diesel) to US prices, it's $8.56/ US gall
Unleaded is only a couple of pence cheaper!

Is there any cost difference for making premium versus regular gas? Or is it all marketing?

And I'd say you folks have embraced the practice of keeping about rather than driving 100 miles/day on a commute.

I've long promoted the idea of a job exchange to eliminate criss-crossing of workers into each other's zone.

As fickle as jobs seem to be, it might be better to find a good place to live and then find the work. My wife's boss lives in Corona and drives to the Long Beach port. Gets up at 4:30, on the road at 5 or so. Usually makes it in 2 hours, 3 hours to get home.

It's 55 miles ea way. Gas mileage is not all that good in stop and go so figure he's using at least 25 bucks a day. 4.3 weeks in a month, so a little over 500.

And he moved there because the payment was less. $500 less? I don't know.

Unfortunately, there's a lack of port facilities in Corona and that's his gig.

Premium in Calgary is about $5 US per US gallon or about $5.70 per UK gallon so the differential to Europe is coming down. I can remember 19 cents a gallon as a kid and 19 cents a liter as an adult - its now $1.25 a liter.

The longest commutes I know of are in and out of London. My brother has some horror stories of several hour train commutes for some of his co workers. Of course that is on subsidized trains.

I have a 15 minute commute if I drive and 25 minutes on the bus. Parking downtown is about $450 a month for an above ground lot. Gas prices are not that big a concern in this town.

As life in the UK is pretty expensive... Some do.

Just about double the price for everything and the salary are barely the same.

So, some British actually live in France (Calais) and commute via the Chunnel to the UK everyday
