What is your thermostat set at?

As we're coming through the worst of winter...Please vote. I'm not making any judgments, just curious.

If yours is set at 69 please select the closest option 70.

It is programmable- 62 at night, and 65 during the day. We keep it on the cold side, and bump it up if we feel the need.

jyl 03-03-2011 04:01 AM

Programmable. Set for 68F during short bursts of the day totalling about 4 hours (when people wake up, get back from school, etc), set to 62F the rest of the time. Outside of those bursts of more heat, the house is usually around 65-66F. When it is really cold, I sometimes have to turn on the heat manually. I find the low 60F's to be kinda chilly. I don't usually wear a sweater indoors.

I used the average actual temp in the house, to answer your poll.

masraum 03-03-2011 04:10 AM

It changes throughout the day, but usually high 60s when its cold and mid 70s when it's hot. Programmable therm means that it changes a few degrees throughout the day.

That is pretty much our settings.

62 at nights and when we are not there, 68 when we are.

In the summer is is 82 when we are not there and 78 when we are. We have ceiling fans in every room. If we are goig to have a lot of guests, I will crank the AC down to 70 if it is a real hot day outside.

stomachmonkey 03-03-2011 05:07 AM

The beauty of living in TX is in Winter the days are nice so not a lot of heat needed until nighttime.

In the Summer when it's 105 outside 80 inside is downright refreshing.

javadog 03-03-2011 05:19 AM

Most winter days we only run the downstairs heat in the morning, to bring the lower part of the house up to 70, then we shut it off for the day. The upstairs generally stays between 60 and 65, without help from the upstairs HVAC zone. Nothing is on at night. Worst case, it gets down to around 60 by morning.

Similar drill in the summer. We usually use the upstairs A/C and leave the downstairs off, unless it's really hot and humid. We do run the A/C more than the heater, although its use is tempered by the use of fans when we sleep.

When I was a super cheap bastage in Western Mass, the downstairs unit would be 65 from 5am-7am and 5pm-11pm. Otherwise it was 50F. The upstairs unit was set to 50, unless my step-daughter was around. Summer the bedroom had an AC and was only used at night.

These days, winter 72 day, 60 night. Summer 75 day, 65 night (bedroom).

I like the bedroom cold at night. My plan this year is to install a small split unit for the bedroom.

osidak 03-03-2011 05:38 AM

During the winter 64 and during the summer between 68 and 70 most of the time

sca037 03-03-2011 05:38 AM

64 during the Winter, and OFF during the Summer (no A/C, don't need it).

72. I can't stand being cold.

We keep it relatively consisteant all year. Roughly 70 during the day. 60ish at night in the winter. about 70ish at night in summer.

72doug2,2S 03-03-2011 07:02 AM

I'm surprised to see so many 75 in summer. I freeze, not literally, below 78 in the summer and that is about what ours is set at 78-79.

targa911S 03-03-2011 07:06 AM

67 day 62 night. off in the summer. only used the a/c a few times last summer.

72doug2,2S 03-03-2011 07:14 AM

A lot of dual temps here between day and night. We have a closed loop geothermal system that likes to be set once and left alone. It doesn't like changes more than 1-2 degrees and will eventually give up and throw on the emergency heat.

But left alone it will happily keep up with the changing temps outside even when it is minus 20. Amazingly it is very warm air, unlike our old heat pump. Expenses are really low too even at 72.

Tobra 03-03-2011 10:15 AM

I said 70 and 75 respectively, but that is not entirely accurate. It is on a program, so at night in the winter it is 60, then it comes on before the wife gets up, shuts off during the day, turns on when she gets home. I don't care if the house is cold in the AM, because I am going to walk the dog PDQ anyway.

We have something called the delta breeze here. Summer evenings, the temps will drop quite a bit at night, so you open up the house and it is all good. Need to get a whole house fan to really take advantage of this.

Porsche-O-Phile 03-03-2011 10:17 AM

Actually it's 72 day/65 night (winter) 75 night (summer) and has a programmable t-stat that reverts to the "night" setting whenever we're not home (for the cats). My occupied/in-use temperature is a year-round 72 however. I don't care what it costs.

nostatic 03-03-2011 10:23 AM

No AC here so no summer setting. In winter, heater is off unless it gets down to below 65. When we go to sleep I turn it down to like 55. I hate having the heater on when I'm asleep.

pete3799 03-03-2011 10:31 AM

I heat with wood mostly so temps vary. Last night it was a whisker below 0.....house was around 75* this morn.
When using oil i set it at 68 during the day (if we're home) otherwise 65 at night.

12own911 03-03-2011 10:41 AM

75 and 90 for me... I hate cold with a passion... most times it is about 78 in my house during winter and 85 in summer.

:D

crustychief 03-03-2011 10:45 AM

65 in the winter with occasional bumps as necessary. I don't use the AC in the summer except for an average of a week when the temps go above 100, then I just set the thing for 90 to take the edge off.

G50 03-03-2011 12:52 PM

Where I am, when it's too hot, we open the windows.

When it's too cold, we close them.

Also have a "whole house" fan system to help when needed.

Very, very rarely do we use the forced heating or AC.

I've got an old ('67) 2 story home. Id love to have up and downstairs AC. Unfortunately, I don't, so we have to set the AC about 2-3 degrees warmer/cooler than we want the upstairs to be. I often will leave the fan set to ON just to keep the upstairs and downstairs temps similar. It seems to work. Especially this time of year when the weather is nice. If I didn't, I'd get home at 5pm and find my downstairs at 72 and the upstairs at 78 or higher.

Oh Haha 03-03-2011 01:14 PM

Our home is 2 stories and we keep the thermostat at 67 year 'round. No a/c for the hot months but we have movable a/c units.

The house is comfortable and no one complains it is too cold. ( If they do, I don't hear them and in that case it doesn't matter anyway.:D)

Joeaksa 03-03-2011 01:45 PM

Programmable.

68-70 at night, then 72 when I wake up in the winter, if you can call it that here in Arizona.

78 or so during the days in summer then 80 at night.

Crowbob 03-03-2011 03:14 PM

Freezing cold in winter, boiling hot in summer like it's supposed to be. Problem is summer usually comes on a weekday.

Wow, Kim likes to stay HOT! :D

No AC and no insulation in This Old House (built in 1930). So, it stays about the same as Kim's in the summer and I hate 80* at night (I do have a window AC unit and I take the bedroom down to below 70 at night), but not any other rooms).

imcarthur 03-03-2011 04:41 PM

We have a backsplit that is not prone to even heat which complicates things. Programmable of course. Winter: 65 except for bumps to 73 @ 6 - 8 & 6 pm - 11 pm. I use a space heater in my office during the day as needed. Summer: we only use AC for 1 month on average set at 74. Windows work well here in the spring, much of summer & autumn.

Does this mean you've found the perfect climate, or are you a glutton for punishment?
