I guess I need to activate parental controls on our computer .

My 5 year old boy loves Lego products. They have a great website with all sorts of interactive games and videos. Sometimes when he keys Lego in the search box, he gets directed to Lego you tube videos. Most of these are pretty cute, but while I was getting ready for work this morning, I overheard some of what he was watching, and Lego Batman was pimp slappin' hoes, and robin was puking on the floor and hallucinating from bad acid. There was also some fairly strong language. We keep the computer in the living room , so he is always supervised while he is on it but looks as if we have hit that point where we will have to make it a little bit of a safer enviroment for him.

Don't get me started on Youtube.

The lack of rating and controls is abysmal and their efforts to provide tools for parents is pathetic.

I understand the enormous volume of content that gets uploaded every day makes monitoring each submission nearly impossible.

But if they implemented a series of questions, Age, Explicit Language, Nudity, Violence etc... that were required to be answered before a post it would be a start.

I don't think of myself as at all overprotective, but there's no way I'd let a 5 year old roam the Internet or YouTube without direct supervision. Even adults can sometimes stumble upon some pretty racy stuff by accident. Do you really want to explain to your kid why he found a video of Batman banging Wonderwoman?

Wouldn't work. People wouldn't want to voluntarily subject their uploads to censorship. I've seen it work the other way too - people marking tame content as "adult" just to drive the hits.

Your best bet is to try to control it on your end, rather than try to get the other 5B people on youtube to conform to your specific needs.

And for the love of gawd and all that is holy, keep him the hell away from 4chan.

I use Kidzui for my little ones. KidZui - The Internet for Kids

Kidzui is an internet browser that only goes to specific websites.

You can password lock your computer so the child has to log on to windows as a seperate user with only the browser and some games available to them if you like.

Very happy with NetNanny. Each user has a specific login/password and can have customized settings for using the internet. Also, the admin controls when access is allowed and for how long. It also keeps a log any time someone tries to access content that is blocked.
