Best way to sell a spoon and price evaluation

I've got a Springfield Armory XDM 9mm 4.5" barrel. It's about 1.5yr old. I've got about 2000 rounds through it. It's in very good shape, I'd say 90-95%.

I want to purchase one of the new XDM compacts in 9mm and then sell this full size to help offset the cost. I just don't see a good reason to keep both. Especially since keeping the one would probably mean waiting a bit longer before I can purchase the second. I got my CHL in Dec and have been carrying the full size. I can't carry at work, and don't want to leave the gun in my convertible while I'm at work, so I really mostly carry on weekends. (I'm looking at getting a small gunvault so I can leave the gun in the car) The full size is not bad, but the compact would be much nicer to carry.

If you aren't familiar, the XD and XDM series guns are pretty much direct competition with Glocks. The XDM is the premium model of the XD line. It comes with a "match grade" barrel, a better trigger and changeable backstraps for the grip. I think these extra features make the XDM more comparable to the new Gen 4 Glocks. To buy this gun new at Bud's Gun Shop you'd pay $568.

There's a local range that has the compact at a good price. He's also willing to sell my gun on consignment at 10%. I was talking to the owner of the shop today about consignment and his thoughts on pricing. He said that his personal rule is "if it's within $100 of a new gun, just get the new gun". That seems reasonable to me for this sort of gun. I'd probably do the same thing.

Based on that sort of thinking, and the fact that I'd like a fairly quick sale, I'd probably want to price the gun at or below $450.

There's also a site called "texasguntrader.com" which is like craigslist for guns in TX. I'd work out something local and face to face and would get a bill of sale.

Another local site texaschlforum.com has a "classifieds" section and services Texas, but has a huge following that's fairly local to my area.

The guy said that I could keep the gun at his place on consignment, and still advertise on the various websites.

I don't have much experience with buying and selling guns, so I was hoping for the opinions of some of you fellow spoon nuts on this one.

Thanks

I do parking lot deals all the time. Check out your local Backpage and do a search on Glocktalk classifieds and Gunbroker. If you do a face-face deal with a non-FFL, be sure to check their ID to verify they're a TX resident, better if they have a CHL (so you know they're a non-prohibited possessor). If you sell to an FFL or a cop, it's nothing. I've sold to a few cops and shipped out of state a few times. Shipping for non-FFL's is a b!tch.

If it was a 45 ACP XDM I would be interested.

Check prices on completed auctions on gunbroker. Have to have a gb auction login to do it, but if you sort by number of bids you'll get a fair idea of price.

I have "bought" a gun locally FTF using this website (of course I used the Ohio section). If I were ever to try to "sell" one, I would try this site first as I believe it is free.

Listening to U Boyz is like listening to medieval Europeans talk about the earth being flat....let me clue U the earth is round...

When pricing a used spoon that IS STILL IN PRODUCTION...you look at what the DISTRIBUTER PRICE is...and then if it in like new condition U price it a few $$$ under.

In general look on GB, Guns America, Guns International and Collectors Arms for pricing.. If U see the best price for like condition at 500 you price at 490...cause U get the call first

A Citizen can ship USPS BUT it HAS TO GO TO AN FFL...and USPS Prioity Mail is the way to fly with hand spoons. With long spoons FED EX Ground...

Maybe U can get away with those Parking Lot deals in AZ, but not in most states...and even then you are taking quite a risk...as U don't know who the fk U are buying or selling to...The worst scenario is for a Parking Lot spoon U sold to be used by someone who went POSTAL....then U will get your 15 minutes of fame by having your face spread all over the Nancy Grace program...

When using GB etal...you ship to the Buyers FFL, who puts it on his books and complys with all state and local laws. In other words it becomes his responsibilty that the the Buyer is bona fide.. Also if a local sale U can do private party transfer and I WOULD run it through the local FFL or Police Dept...U do NOT want some LE agency coming and knocking on your door asking where were you on February 29th....

A coupla years back a friend asked me to look at a coupla FLINTLOCK spoons a friend of his had. I agreed to meet the guy at a local GS...We were in a back parking lot when 4 BATF agents in 2 cars dropped by for a chat...Since they were ANTIQUE FLINTLOCKS whci th eBATF doesn't even consider to be a firearm they didn't have much to contribute to the conversaton...and left...

BTW I have been licensed in one way or another by the BATF since 1985..as such I abide by ALL LAWS...

I think you have this backwards. Non-FFL's cannot mail handspoons through the US Postal Service. They have to go through an FFL, meaning the FFL has to mail it for you. Can't remember how it is with longspoons, but if you're mailing a pistol and are not an FFL, either take it to your FFL or send via FedEx or UPS.

Parking lot deals are fine. I've never done one where we didn't exchange photos or photocopies of each other's DL's and CCW's and sometimes a bill of sale. Paying an FFL to get in the middle of the transaction in no way guarantees the gun is not stolen. It just puts the transaction on paper to which ATF then has access. If it's a crime gun, you're still going to lose it if the ATF gets wind of it.

Regular folk can send long guns via USPS, handguns must go common carrier. And the common carriers dictate next day over night ($60+) to prevent theft... Often much cheaper to have a local FFL mail it for you, pay him $20 plus the postage.

Common Carrier on hand spoons does want Next Day.. for Fed EX at least if it is GUN PARTS...thenthey will ship GROUND. This is all co policy..

The LAW says that you can ship as a civilian a handspoon to a FFL. ...Now the practice is different than what the law dictates...btw Even an FFL can not ship a spoon to a civie.

Looks like I've got it sold. I posted it on a site today that's a Texas specific site like Craigslist for guns. I had an offer for a trade for a Sig P250 in 15 minutes and an offer to buy in under 45 mins. I had 2 other offers in a few hours, and even after I amended the posting to say "SALE PENDING" in the title and body, I had another guy ask me to drop the price.

I went by my local range and picked up my new XDM 9 compact in anticipation. The compact has a .7" shorter barrel and uses 13 round mags instead of 19 round mags. The fullsize was OK for CCW, but the compact is MUCH better. I wouldn't have thought that the .7" and 6 rounds made much difference weight-wise, but it feels considerable when wearing it.

The extended mags are 19 round (same mags as the full size) and my Crossbreed Supertuck holster works for this gun as well. So I'm keeping the extra mag that I bought for my full size and I've got a working IWB holster. I'm set now. Well, minimally set. I've got a long list of guns that I'd like to have but since my attempts at getting a fruiting money tree have failed....

Thanks for the help guys. Now I need to post that shotgun so I can buy a bunch of ammo.

I always check prices on gunbroker.com, gunsamerica.com and any appropriate specialty websites (milsurps.com, M1911.com, etc...). I used to go to gun shows, but they have been hit or miss for me...
