Can I use teflon tape on a fitting that's going to get hot?

Well?

Can I put a little teflon tape on a brass water fitting that's going to get about 200-220 degrees F?

thx

Good to go. Use it in the lab ovens all the time.

Yes, it's done all the time on HW connections.

They also sell a version in a red container marked for high temps although the blue box stuff works fine.

PTFE or teflon tape is good to around 450F, but I hate that crap. In fact it's banned in the $5 billion plant where I work.

Teflon paste pipe dope works much better and doesn't leave strings of teflon to contaminate the system later on down the road.
It's OK for sewer drain piping but that's about it.

I don't think you need that tight of a seal on your typical bong...

YMMV

If I remember correctly nuclear plants banned it since over 450 degrees it produced phosgene gas which is a pretty nasty poison AND it was easily made radioactive by neutrons! We could never find out how that was tested and on what but it was banned!

Buy all the PTFE tape you can get now because there is a huge increase in the price or even a shortage starting April. The Mineral "fluorspar" used in its mfg only from china is a real problem until 2030 or until we start mining it again!!!.

Correct, no Teflon allowed in/near a reactor.

Wow, didn't know that. Do teflon pastes need the same mineral as well?

Not just paste!

From the TriStar Blog:

Why is PTFE pricing going through the roof??

All of us in the fluoropolymer business are suffering what could be called a perfect storm of bad news! First, the raw material situation. One of the key ingredients in the processing of fluoropolymers is a mineral called fluorspar. This is a material that is critical in the production of not only fluoropolymers but pharmaceuticals, hydrofluoric acid, refrigerants and any other product that requires a fluorine based stock. China controls most of the worlds resources on this mineral and it became part of a war of words and ultimately manipulation in the world market. Countries, including the USA, are now scrambling to reopen old or open new mining resources of this critical mineral. So this shortage, as well as a worldwide surge in demand for fluoropolymers and a reduction in processors of the PTFE resin, all leads to this very difficult situation. The bad news is there is no end in sight. The EU has declared fluorspar to be on it’s worldwide shortage list until 2030. So we all will have to deal with this out of control pricing escalation for years to come. Best if you call Tri Star and place blanket orders for your requirements for the future!!
