We bought a 2007 BMW 530i a few weeks ago. $28k. CPO and free maintenance until 100k miles. We love it...

Thanks Mike, I'll put 5 series bmrs on my list. I think I'd like the size over the 3 series.

Yeah, mpg is a consideration but probably not the deciding factor. TDIs are on my list but with TDI premiums and diesel prices they're slipping lower.

What about a Volkswagen Touareg TDI???

Quote:
5.0L V10 TDI diesel will be available in 2004. In its European configuration, it produces 303hp and an astounding 553lb-ft of torque. This engine gets raves in Europe and it’s not difficult to see why. First of all, forget everything you think you know about diesels. This diesel is different. This diesel can push the Touareg to 150 mph and 25 mpg, although not, regretfully, at the same time.

Cayenne will probably need a few items "updated" right off the bat though. Cardon shaft, rear drive shaft, coils, tires, brakes and cooling pipes. So you may need more than your budget.

You can get them for that, but they will be considered "naked" at that price. No warranty on a Cayenne is going "naked." You can be down 3800 for a coolant pipe burst in a matter of mins on what seems to be like a perfect Cayenne. So the moral of the story is get a CPO, or in warranty unless you have deep pockets.

Any criteria? Your listed choices are kind of all over the spectrum of cars.

I am all over the map. I haven't started seriously looking yet. Been browsing CL adds for Audi's, M3s and Cayennes. A Cayman would be sweet but I think I need more room.

You can sure get a heck of a lot of used M3 for that, even at the bottom end of that price range. I'd at least test drive a few.

The new choices you have listed, you are going to take a heck of a hit in depreciation over the next few years.

Depends on what you think a heck of a lot of depreciation is. The Volvo, for example, has a 67% residual after 3 years @ 10K mi/yr. Figure a 5% discount, 95-67 = 28% or say 9% per year. 9%= $3K per year. Not bad for being under warranty with zero maintenance expense.
