Pinetop Perkins, dead at age 97. Rest in peace. Back with Muddy again.

Damn...One of the kindest gentlemen I've ever met. I've got a vivid memory of him playing in a friend's living room a few years back. RIP Pinetop...

Get out! Really? I still can see him in a red suit and a red derby hat at Skippers Smokehouse in Tampa.

I remember you telling me that several years ago...when you mentioned "your" Pinetop (drummer?) in passing and I asked. Bob Margolin (mentored by Muddy) has lived in this area for years, thus the connection. Pinetop almost moved down here, due to health reasons, and in with a friend who's like a "mother" to many of these "older cats"...you'd dig the pics on her fridge Dave. I'm actually smiling now despite sorrow...Pinetop was like that.

Meanwhile, Keith Richards is still with us... Where's the justice?!

. Without KR (and the Stones), most of these older cats would've died in obscurity a few decades ago and NEVER enjoyed their success in later life. JMO, but the Stones (amongst a few others of note) were my doorway to the blues scene.

Amen. Keith is one of my biggest heros. Although for me, I was listening to the old delta boys long before I heard the stones.

That's true on a lot of levels; Without Keith Richards Hubert Sumlin would have died of lung cancer five years ago.

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to rile anyone up, I was referring to Keith's "lifestyle choices". I didn't know he was up for sainthood. Seriously, Little Feat and Led Zeppelin got me into the blues, but I don't look at Lowell George or anyone in Led Zeppelin as positive role models. I'm glad you guys see another side to Keith and I'm very glad you're into the blues because they are fantastic!!

I can't seem to embed the YouTube link, but go there.
YouTube - Goin' Down Slow If that doesn't work, Google Youtube and "goin down slow." He was the master. And he wrote his own eulogy. Listen to it. edit: I see St. Louis Jimmy actually wrote the song. Last edited by milt; 03-22-2011 at 05:05 PM.. |
