I like how dog people refer to female dogs as a "*****", and then ALWAYS say "you know, we call female dos "*****es"... Wouldn't it be more efficient to just call them "female dogs" and then not have to offer up the "translation"?

Entomology is indeed interesting. There's software out there, similar to the various programs for tracing one's gynecology. Beware pre-1970 stuff though, because it's full of inaccuracies and bugs (grace hoppers, I think).

Example:

"A common myth about the kangaroo's English name is that "kangaroo" was a Guugu Yimithirr phrase for "I don't understand you." According to this legend, Lieutenant Cook and naturalist Sir Joseph Banks were exploring the area when they happened upon the animal. They asked a nearby local what the creatures were called. The local responded "Kangaroo", meaning "I don't understand you", which Cook took to be the name of the creature. The Kangaroo myth was debunked in the 1970s by linguist John B. Haviland in his research with the Guugu Yimithirr people."

A better question (to me anyway) is why some call a chest of drawers called a dresser ???

A dresser is a double column of drawers that can be used to...dress a child on.

A chest of drawers is a taller single column of drawers.

At least that's what I was told.
What is a bureau then?

Same reason we call individually wrapped sterilized self-stick bandages "bandaids." As I understand it, Davenport made a lot of well-known couches, and it became a household word which seems to have survived the company.

Makes me wonder. Will our grandkids be mystified that we say "google" when we mean "look for?"
