Too bad. I really like Automobile. It's a shame he left his creation in the end.

Long-time auto journalist David E. Davis Jr. dies - AutoWeek Magazine
By STEVEN COLE SMITH on 3/27/2011 David E. Davis, Jr., inarguably one of the deans of automotive journalism, died Sunday, March 27, at age 80. Davis had been suffering from bladder cancer and had undergone surgery a few days earlier. Even so, his passing was unexpected--he appeared to be in comparatively good health and reasonably good spirits at the Amelia Island Concours in Florida just two weeks earlier. Davis was the founder of Automobile magazine, which just celebrated his 25th anniversary, and prior to that he was the editor of Car and Driver. He had returned to the pages of Car and Driver in the summer of 2009 to write a monthly column for the magazine's editor, Eddie Alterman, a graduate of Automobile magazine.

The first magazine I ever bought a subscription to was Automobile. Largely due to the writing of David E. Davis and Jean (then Lindamood), it has been a long time favorite and still graces my mailbox on a monthly basis.
RIP Mr. Davis. angela

"The Whispering Bomb"
IIRC: That was his headline for the review of the BMW 2002 when it first hit the scene in 1969. I loved his work at C/D. When he started Automobile, I felt he lost a little of his edge. He recently came back to C/D and he seemed to regain his sea legs. He's one of the few fellows that cared whether a car had room for his hat. He will be missed.

The world I knew, and the world I was most comfortable in is changing. David could turn a phrase that would sum up a lot of facts and feelings in one pithy shot.
''The English invented the car, and the Germans made them fast, but it was the Italians who taught them to dance and sing.'' That may not be the exact quote, but it has stuck with me a long time. He will be missed. |

I, too, enjoyed reading his columns/articles/books over the years. Didn't always agree with him, but he was a great writer.
Here is another link about him: David E. Davis, Jr. 1930

Sorry to hear that news.
He was never one of my favorite writers...seemed to be somewhat of an an ego-maniacal elitist. And "Automobile" magazine wasn't...and still isn't... very good in my opinion. ("Cogito ergo Zoom "..really, who was he trying to impress with that line ?) But, I never met him. He may have been a wonderful guy. I shouldn't speak ill of the dead. His BMW 2002 article was good I will say. |
