Can this safety crew be any more incompetent?

The safety crew is about as helpful as a kick in the nuts. They spent more time putting the fire out every where, but where the driver was. It reminds me of another Ferrari driver video, who wrecked in Japan.

Sorry of it's a repost.

No firemen there. You can't get near a fire like that w/o gear. None of those workers even had goggles that I could see.

The info on the video says he did survive.

Bummer!!
Total lack of training/experience the guys with the ext. wouldn't get closer than 5 feet to the car and were spraying the burning fuel on the ground, maybe they thought it was going to explode WTF. They never addressed the front of the car and fire there. The poor driver was in direct flame contact for about 35-40 seconds the suits are designed for something like 10-15. No extrication equipment showed up on scene at all, priority is ALWAYS the driver if he gets pissed because I've dowsed him with dry. chem etc then so be it.
Hate to see something like that hope the driver is ok, note to self: don't crash in Japan.

at that level, they should be going with the highest rated firesuits, which are 35seconds until 2nd degree burn.

def a big wtf. looks like a international level track. don't think it's japan. announcer sounds spanish or something.

There was another famous video where there was a crash on the start. Driver survived and sued the track. Imcompetence was even worse on that one.

Here is the first part. Terrifying.

I am not trying to defend the guy but sometimes a backup hose will use a low velocity fog over the primary hose man so they can get closer to more effectively attack the fire.

We reviewed this for training at the last NASCAR race in Fontana, the IRL has their own safety team that travels with them, it is not the local tracks team. The team was not happy with how that went, obviously, and will have that haunt them for a while. These events are so dynamic and never go as planned but you must have good SOP's and a back up to your back up when things go south.
Sorry about the Japan comment if I was wrong.

If you're looking for one, the silver lining of the original video is that the driver's upper body was not really in the car where the fire was. How he ended up outside the car, I'm not sure. It looks like he was wearing a lap belt, but it was also a pretty violent looking crash. What can happen in a crash like that is amazing.

I didn't initially notice, and had to go back and watch the video again. I've circled his head and arms in red.

Still, I wouldn't trade places with him.

My God that is painful to watch. I thought these guys knew what to do. How about a handheld FE to knock down the flames until the hoses are charged? They look like the Keystone Kops from the silent film days. Some heads need to roll!!!

Let's hope they did better today.....

De Silvestro in massive Indy crash

Thursday, May 19th 2011, 16:56 GMT

Simona de Silvestro has become the first driver to crash during preparations for this year's Indianapolis 500, as the HVM racer had a dramatic accident early in today's practice session.

De Silvestro's car appeared to suffer a mechanical failure at Turn 3, hitting the wall and twice becoming airborne before landing upside down and on fire.

She was able to extricate herself from the wreckage without assistance and is being taken to hospital for further checks. De Silvestro is awake and alert, with initial reports suggesting she has escaped with minor burns.

The incident caused damage to the track's debris fence so has resulted in a long halt to practice while repairs are carried out. Today looks set to be only the second day of the week not interrupted by poor weather, with practice getting underway in cold but good conditions after two consecutive rained-off days.

looks like it took about 70 seconds from when the car stopped until they pulled the driver from the burning wreckage...

I have no idea if that is a good response time... of course you would like to see things move more quickly
