Ever lost your ride for speeding?

Has anyone ever had a car impounded over a speeding violation? Just wondering if its possible and if it is, in what jurisdictions?

I haven't, but there are lots and lots of places these days that can do it if they think that you are "street racing". Also, I think that many/most places can do it if you're going fast enough.

Not personally, but the tactic has been used in CA for street racing. That's a matter of record.

My wife got out of triple digit speeding tickets three times, in my 240SX when I had that, my integra and in her big block pickup.

Turns out, in Southeast Texas anyway, if an emergency room nurse gets pulled over on her way to work, unless she has a dead body in the back seat, she gets a warning.

If she has a dead body in the back shed probably get a police escort.

My sister was a ER (ICU now) nurse in Northridge. She was pulled on the way to work once and LAPD saw her ID and said, slow down. There are other people that really need your help at the hospital. A few months later, CHP pull her over for doing 75 on the fwy with no one around after work. Her hospital ID was right there but he wrote her up anyway.

In Hawaii if you get caught doing 80+mph or 25 over the speed limit, your car is automatically impounded. Good thing I left the state soon after...

Can they impound it if it is not your car but someone else's? (wouldn't seem fair to the owner)

In Ontario, 50km/hour over the speed limit will get the vehicle (be it yours, someone elses, rental, doesn't matter) impounded for a week, plus face a minimum of $2000 fine, up to $10000 fine.

Some places have rules that if you double the speed limit- instant reckless driving which means impounded + hauled away in cop car.

BTDT. (1st night I had new Corvette 17 years ago- damn I'm getting old)

I want to say that most states where I've lived you could get hit with reckless driving for driving more than 25 mph over the speed limit.

Arrest and/or impound is usually at the officer's discretion.

I can't remember the MPH point, I think it's 100 mph, but in Oregon you will lose your ride. The good news is that many jurisdictions do not have the ability or inclination to deal with impounds, so you might drive away with a big ticket. Point is, YES, you can lose your ride.

If there's a dead body in the back seat, there's no hurry.
