How good or bad is avcacdo for you?

My doc suggest I eat half a day and fill the hole with Olive oil to reduce or keep cholesterol under control with a little pepper instead of taking a low dose of Lipitor. What do you guys think, is she nuts or not? Oh, she also think I should be eating almond and walnuts as snacks during the day.

Avocados are one of the best things you can eat. I've been supplementing my diet with them for several years. My Dr recommends them and a handful of nuts every day...

No that would be when he's spending some time with Jill.

This is probably oversimplified a bunch, but my understanding is that there are 2 kinds of cholesterol, HDL and LDL. The way that you can remember which is which LDL=Lethal and HDL=Healthy. The main source of HDL is plants (and maybe some fish). Avocado is super high in fats (oil), and that's where the HDL hangs out. So, yeah, the Avocado full of Olive oil (another source of HDL, I believe) would probably be like dosing yourself with HDL.

It's my understanding that having more HDL helps your body get rid of the LDL resulting in lower "cholesterol".

Just wait a few years and a study will come out how they are bad, and another study will show they is good.

Like coffee or red wine.

the guacamole act of 1917.

I would not eat half a day but rather just make them part of your rotating diet. Variety is healthy as long as your choices are reasonable.

I would, however, eliminate things like the chips that you dip into the guacamole. ;)

I have been eating oatmeal in the morning for about 2 months. I had a physical last week including the blood work and xrays. I'm sitting on sawbone's exam table while he's telling me how good everything looked and that I was 10 years younger than my chronological age. I don't know if oatmeal and not eating meat has anything to do with it or not.

I celebrated with about 4 Scotches. :) If he knew what I'm really like, he'd be telling me to buy life insurance.

Damn, thats FUNNY...

"They have tsetse flies down there the size of eagles. Really. In the evening, I would stand in front of my hut and watch in horror...as these giant flies would pick children off the ground and carry them away. Oh, it was an incredible sight. Peasants screaming...chasing these flies down the road, waving brooms. You can imagine the pathetic quality of this. Waving these crudely fashioned brooms at these enormous flies...as they carried their children off to almost certain death."

" The Good Fats" help lower the bad cholesterol in your body, and there's evidence that they may reduce cancer risk. Still, they should be consumed in moderation.
monounsaturated fat: found in olive and peanut oils, avocados and most nuts.

A friend of mine described Avacado as
"Natures jungle wrapped bacon"

The word fat scares me. There's the good in HDL. Moderation means 2-3 avocados a week, you think? My smart wife thought there was a lot of fat in avocados so she refuse to let me eat them. I have not had it in more then a year. I am thinking payback time. I love em'.

We have switch to cooking with only olive oil. We even stir fry with it. I thought peanut oil was bad for you?

There is more than meets the eye to the average avocado.

I think they are delicious! Slice in half, remove the pit [I have one growing in the yard], and then lightly salt. YUM!

-They are high in fat. 75% of the calories of an avacado come from fat, but it is monounsaturated, similar to olive oil. Fat's effect on the human body is primarily directed at the heart, and this sort of fat does little damage, so the fat content doesn't matter that much.

But there is another fairly common bad that comes from avocados, and many people don't know this: They can trigger migraine headaches. Most people think a "migraine" is simply a sore head that you get when you work extra hard. No, this is not the case at ALL!

Short course: A migraine headache isn't a hangover, and it isn't caused by stress. A migraine is a headache caused by your brain's blood vessels dilating wide open and then constricting extremely tight. This is caused by a food allergy, or [typically in women], hormone changes. In rare occasions, a brain tumor can cause this. If you have a migraine, typically you suddenly develop a blind spot in one eye, then in your peripheral vision, there is a line of flashing, spinning lights that develops. Then you get sick- you usually throw up, and this is followed by a pounding headache that will last a few hours. These aren't the only symptoms- some people lose hearing, some people cannot talk, or develop slurred speech for a while. Some people have none of these symptoms- they just develop a pounding, pounding headache for no reason. And they don't understand why....

Excessive consumption of avocado can cause a migraine headache. MSG [Accent flavor enhancer], soy products, red wine, cheese, and chocolate are other foods that can trigger this allergy. I can eat one avocado in a day and be fine, but if I eat two, I will probably have a migraine 24 hours later. That's the weird thing about these- the effect takes place a long time later.

I blame the manufacturers of aspirin and acetaminophen and other OTC pain relievers for this lack of knowledge of what migraines are. They advertise "migraine" relief while not actually telling you that the real solution to the problem is change of diet. They'd just rather you kept buying their pills. There are prescription pills that will stop one of these headaches IMMEDIATELY. They'd rather you NOT know about those drugs.....
