What moves you to purchase an unknown brand of vodka?

Hi everyone, I am conducting a small research for a paper I need to write and was hoping to gather some information on what moves consumers to buy a new brand of vodka. If you could participate in my poll, it would help me tremendously with my research. I realize that this would be a poll of well off segment of the market (we wouldn't be Porsche or BMW owners otherwise), but I'd like to gather as much info as possible about all groups. With that said, here is the question:

What moves you to purchase an unknown brand of vodka?

1. Price

2. Bottle design and perceived quality it carries

3. Country of origin

4. Number of times a product was distilled

5. Product base (grain, potato, grapes, etc.)

6. I would not buy an unknown vodka because I know what I like and I stick with it.

7. I do not care for any of the above attributes, as I mix my drinks and can't feel the difference in vodkas anyways.

Thanks,
Sergei

Not at all interested in vodka but if you repeated the poll for scotch....

Speedy:)

Tonic and wedges of lime.

Gogar 04-01-2011 09:11 PM

For me it's sort of like a Flowchart.

1. Price is the most important because it IMMEDIATELY lets me know what zone the product is 'shooting for' or whatever. If let's say there's 3 ranges of price, <$20, $20-40, and over $40 for a .750mL.

After I center on that medium level, I'd then find out if it was Potato or Grain, and then boobs.

This assumes that there's no $20-40 bottles made from plastic, and there's no vodka in Brown bottles.

I don't really think I know anything about Vodka, though, so I'm painting with a big brush. Whichever vodka will get me more boobs is what I'm shooting for.

Schumi 04-01-2011 09:41 PM

Price.

Cheaper the better.

8 dollars for a handle? I'm in. Cool bottle is a +.

Mr_Wizard 04-01-2011 10:32 PM

Vodka induces me to yaking. A nice smooth tequila for Mr. Wizard.

Tobra 04-01-2011 11:32 PM

I run my cheap vodka through a Brita filter half a dozen times, and use it most for making Kahlua and white russians.

chocolatelab 04-01-2011 11:48 PM

for what its worth the costco vodka brand is private label kettle 1 i believe

UconnTim97 04-02-2011 02:01 AM

When I drank vodka, I looked for those distilled from potato and rye, those were my favorite. To me, it's all about what material was distilled...

dennis in se pa 04-02-2011 08:00 AM

" (we wouldn't be Porsche or BMW owners otherwise)," - suggesting all of the contributors are well heeled is improper. Owning an old 944 or BMW 3 series does not equate to any class position, nor does owning a GT2, which could be leased.

If you go for price you are obviously "trained" that higher cost = higher quality.

Quality in Vodka comes through the distillation process. The more cycles and the finishing process determine the quality.

Gogar 04-02-2011 08:05 AM

That's a pretty condescending post from a guy with a bouncing boobies avatar.

RWebb 04-02-2011 11:21 AM

um... let's see... I'd be motivated if the store was out of rum, scotch, whiskey, beer, wine, brandy and...

peppy 04-02-2011 11:36 AM

I voted price. I have tried a few different liquors just because they were on sale.

dennis in se pa 04-02-2011 02:14 PM

Those boobies posted above are kind of droppy for young ones, don't you think?

Picky, picky.

People have tried to tell me that there is this great difference in vodka. I don't have that sensation. It's like moonshine to me, just something to drink when you want to drink.

So...price. Definitely not the bottle shape.

porsche4life 04-02-2011 03:27 PM

I tend to drink w/e vodka someone else brought..... I don't tend to buy Vodka myself, we don't get along.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/smileys/smileys3.htm

Very, very violently...

Don't drink hard alcohol, haven't bought wadka in 20 years.
I sure like beer tho, dat's different.

Schumi 04-02-2011 08:00 PM

I had a friend who would buy any vodka, as long as it wasn't in a plastic bottle.

I don't subscribe to that, however.

Coldface 04-03-2011 10:00 AM

Interesting tendency. I was a bit under impression that ppl paid a bit more attention to what they were buying. Speaking from my own experience, I tend to look at the bottle, how it looks tells me that the manufacturer is probably not a one man show so to speak. I then check where it came from and make sure vodka is made from grain. Lastly, I look for the country of origin.

Russian and Belarus school of vodka making is geared towards smooth and tasteless vodkas, which warm you up from inside. You do not get too drunk and don't get a huge hangover the next day. They go down smoothly and you can pretty much sip them.
Polish and Ukrainian vodkas have a more profound spirit taste, burn and get you drunk quicker.
Scandinavians, they try, but they do not have the water. Their sources of water, like glaciers and icebergs produce distilled (or dead) water that has little taste, and water is 60% of the vodka.

That's my opinion, but keep on answering, you guys.

Hmm. Alcohol content is what gets you drunk. Maybe the different drunk between the two kinds has more to do with how you drink it than where it was made.

If you drink 5 different types or brands of alcohol that are all 80proof, and you drink them all under the same conditions in the same period of time, you're going to be just as drunk with any of them.

In theory they all should work the same, but in practice I personally digest Russian and Belarus vodkas better. The others make me feel sick the next day.

Lets say you were to drink 200ml of 80 proof vodka. This means you are taking in 80ml of 100% spirit. Had you gotten that spirit clear all in the same amount of time as you would 200ml of vodka, you'd be getting drunk way faster. :)

We used to drink beer with tea spoons and got drunk quite a bit from just one bottle. Oh, and by drunk I mean a state where you remember little the next day :)

Oh well, we can argue all day long, but judging from my little poll, it looks like it's a tough market for a new brand, unless it is cheap.

David 04-03-2011 04:18 PM

I don't buy much vodka because my wife makes sure we're always stocked up. My vodka intake is limited to the occasional martini or bloody mary.

Her choice is cheap Russian.

All in all, I prefer gin.

Vodka tastes like hairspray. Even the expensive ones. But really, the only reason I drink Vodka is either martini's or bloody mary's and the only reason I voted was because of the boobies above...

GH85Carrera 04-05-2011 12:00 PM

I have not bought or consumed vodka in over 25 years. Just beer for me.

scottmandue 04-05-2011 12:02 PM

I vote filtered... but has to be charcoal filtered.

Preferably under $10
