Just didn't feel good and pain. The cause who knows? but it could have been something as simple as not going to the bathroom and holding it too long. I think she used to get high fevers for no reason all of a sudden.

Does sound renal(kidney) to me too. One of the sickest old ladies I ever saw started out with a UTI.

With a lot of the bugs that cause morbidity, they are always there, they are just sort of hanging out. You get your immune system knocked down from whatever stress and it is off to the races.

Poor Baby.
I hate it when the kids are sick...you feel so helpless.

Hang in there.

The best wishes for your baby girl Lubey. I'm pullin' for her. The worst days ever are when you can't make things better for your kid. But she knows she's loved and that can work wonders brother.

Tobra,

We just lucked out at the end. Our 4 year old was on an IV of Tobramycin and Ceftazidime because of the Pseudamonas aeruginosa for 2 weeks at home and the final day just started to get hives and a rash from an allergic reaction from the meds. They said there were not many options for someone that young. If she was older they would have used something different.

Get them to actually culture the urine to see what grows if they haven't. PA should grow nicely in a Bacturcult.

You say they have done urine test, do you know what sort? A bacturcult will take 24-48hrs, but should tell for sure if she has any bad microbes...

OK, Mike. In a scenario like this, with a child at that age that as far as I understand, has passed a lot of tests and investigations with no apparent positive finds, that seem to otherwise be healthy, active, generally gaining weight and height, I would go "veterinarian" stile and try a few weeks of effective treatment against constipation and perhaps also gastritis. Next I would go down the psychosocial path to see what I could discover.

Livi may have something.... How have things been between you and the wife? I know it was pretty rough on the kids for a while....

M.D. Holloway 04-06-2011 06:42 AM

She is no problem going to the bathroom - pretty regular. Things at home are up and down. They did culture the urine twice and did not find anything. But even if it was between her ears how do you explain the red and white blood cells and protein in the urine?

livi 04-06-2011 10:04 PM

That is what I was referring to, Mike. During limited infections, of most any kind, kids will often leak both cells and protein into the urine - but that should not be the case consistently over time. A culture will only reveal bacteria. You need to look at the urine more closely. It could be a sign of inflammation - not infection - of the kidneys (glomerulonephritis). Its an uncommon condition and belly pain is not the most common symptom, but with that urine result it should be further ruled out.
Further, bowel movement frequency will not rule out constipation. It can be very low grade, subtle and over time still produce this kind of symptoms.

So, put the urine under a scope and see what kind of WBCs are present?

Its odd that this should come up, we are going over this sort of stuff in Micro right now... My curiosity is up...

livi 04-06-2011 11:02 PM

Yes, need to evaluate both number and configuration of particularly red cells. I donīt think this is the case, judging by the symptoms, but as it is a potentially serious disease it should be ruled out strictly (which I am confident is already done). Including blood pressure and certain other blood and urine tests regarding inflammatory components and renal function.

Lubey, How's the little one doing today? Any improvement?

Sure hope she's feeling better.

Karl
