Insane "additional dealer markup"
 
This dealer cannot be serious...he has to be simply advertising with this ridiculous "buy it now" price as a way to let folks know he has the car and that he will be asking a stiff ADM...

I asked a dealer once about a crazy markup on the new T-Bird when they first came out. He told me some idiot will buy it.

Is that in addition to add-ons for paint sealant, etching, wheel protectant, nitrogen in the tires, prep, and the other nonsense they tell you they've done? If not, I'd say he's just being honest. I would honor his candor, and negotiate.

When the market was good and the Ford GTs were out I saw one for $130K plus an additonal $130K "market adjustment"

Even Miatas sold for over sticker when they first appeared. '89 Carrera Speedsters went for 120 and more when the window said 70 something. Nothing new or strange about this.

It's not at all uncommon for cars that are desirable in the market to go for a lot more than asking price, especially when they first come out.

Acura NSX, they were going for $90k, but were priced at $60k
I believe the Honda S2000 was going for $60k and was priced at $30k.

I think they call it "supply and demand"

anybody remember that PT Cruisers were going for 10K OVER sticker when they came out.
It's just a POS neon with a hatchback

But far more than double the sticker?

Naw, he's just using that "buy it now" price for advertising...

What's up with that red X thing in the backseat. It's a track car, why not rollbar or something useful?

REALLY?!?! I'd never heard that. Wow. I've driven a few Neons and hated them. I suspect the PT is as bad or worse.

Additional Bracing. Pick up a MAY ROAD & TRACK to learn more. One is the cover car, and they do a road test as well as lapping the Laguna Seca track.

I saw PTs going for way over sticker when they first came out, they are roomy and ok to drive but I wouldn't ever want one.
I worked for a Ford dealer when the TBird came out and saw their first one go for 50k and the guy sent them a letter thanking them for letting him buy it. We bought a brand new one in 2005 for 29k off a different lot.

It's funny, when I was able to make the decisions at the dealer or corporate-dealer level, my policy was nothing over MSRP. Period. No ADM.

We wouldn't sell to another dealer, or someone who was just flipping it. We offered spots to our previous customers first. ADMs make the dealer look stupid and/or greedy, neither of which are good attributes for a dealer that wants to be around long. It seems odd to me to spend $700K/yr advertising to attract new clients then turning just as many of them away by trying to make an extra $5K (or whatever) on 3 or 4 cars. People DO remember when their PT Cruiser Limited cost them $35K and they go to trade it in to your store a year later (after the ether wears off) for $10K and see a whole row of unsold new ones. They tell everyone, and even though the market might support it at the time, the dealer is the bad guy later.

There is no greater vanity than paying a huge premium to be the 'first'.....

Was late 80's, early 90's IIRC. The Isuzu Amigo hit and they were going for ridiculous $'s over sticker. Something like $15k.

Seems to me this would be the smart way for any dealer to go...but then, not all dealers are smart.

Crap that is a lot of money for a mustang (and I like them). I rememeber in the late 80's Chevy dealers swapping ZR1's with themselves for $100K.

That's terrible, the govt should have intervened and forced the dealers to sell at the set price. You know, like they do with oil.

+1 he's just putting it on eBay for the advertising, with the reserve and the "Buy it Now" set so high it won't sell. If it does sell, then it's a knee-slapper for him.
