Tim,
The sad thing is that one, they are still doing it today, and two the liberals around this great country feel that videos like this are "too harsh" to be shown to everyone and thus people do not see just what really happens.
This video was shot I believe by a German video crew and aired on a UK PBS channel. At least the Europeans have the balls to show things like this. If it ever aired here in the states and was not censored it sure would change a lot of people's views on life in Africa.

Traditional circumcision, both male and female is alive and well in Africa. Usually it is not concensual, and most often it really endangers the life of the individual.
Around here informal "initiation schools" are run in rural areas during winter, where forced circumcisions are performed on all boys of a certain age (about 16 years and older). Usually these are of the box-cutter persuasion, though the really traditional ones use (blunt) spears. Sterilization of such "surgical equipment" is arbitrary at best, and many young men die of complications every year - the number is usuall in the low hundreds.
Thankfully, amongst tribes here in SA, female circumcision is either not well established as a tradition, or sometimes eradicated through education, as I can only imagine how high the fatality rate would have been if this were the case.
