fwiw, Mathematical Relationships are notated/modeled (represented) by "the ink dots." BUT, "the ink dots" are NOT the actual relationship. ...the relation can be represented/modeled by the ink. ...but that is all it is; a representation. (sometimes a poor one)

This may seem trivial - the idea that the word is not the thing - yet clearly some are interchanging the two, as the same, and getting REALLY hung up on their model eqn being w/o flaw. (as long as one set of rules is followed)

Clearly problems arise when some people are aware of other rules. ...or see that the serial string of math is oddly notated, and look for the writers intent.

And SOME see more than just that rule. Some see that the notation rules, themselves, are not, and have not been constant.

That is, as others have demonstrated, and as I have linked to... that one grade-school rule which so many cling to, that rule is not ubiquitous thru history, or even some current programing languages. --again, as demonstrated by various eqn writing coders.

But feel free to continually (& ignorantly) berate others for not accepting your one grade-school rule as being ABSO-fuch-ing-LUTE! (because you say so.)

I never berated anyone island911. I will agree with you that (perceived) ambiguity may be an issue for some just not me.

48÷2(9+3) = ????

Notice, four question marks?

Its a four digit answer!!!

It cannot be 2, or 288.

Had it been:

48÷2(9+3) = ???

The answer would be 288

If, instead it had been:

48÷2(9+3) = ?

The answer would be 2!

What is the four digit answer? Well...maybe I need a vision from Tom Cruise or Opra Winfrey before I can figure that out...

True - I used 4 ?'s in the original post.

Thus, the correct answer is 0288. :D I guess I made an ambiguous equation even more ambiguous. Hmmm...

No it isn't you big dummy!

You forgot the dot.

The correct answer is 0.288

Talk about playing the damn ambiguous card. Sheesh!

DARISC 09-29-2011 06:44 AM

This is...sad?:

It's been 5 months and the poll still indicates that 65% of you participants are wrong; you believe that 2 is the correct answer.

This is hilarious:

One even adamantly claims that the equation is ambiguous and that both 2 and 288 are correct answers, depending upon which of the two ambiguous ways to solve the equation is chosen.

Who, Z-man? It's his thread.

Can you solve the equation?

DARISC 09-29-2011 09:10 AM

I think that this thread should be CLOSED!

Kiddin' - thread's still open for those who still think the world is flat -- er, I mean for those who still think the correct answer is 2.

I gots 48 eggs.

I'm gonna divide 'em by a number.

What number, you ask?

Why that number is 2(9 + 3).

Anybody disagree that 2(9 + 3)=24?

If yes, return to 8th grade Beginning Algebra.

Anybody disagree that 48 divided by 24 is 2?

If yes, return to 3rd grade.

Sheesh.

Once again you miss the boat - this time not recognizing sarcasm when you see it.

At least you came up with the right answer to the equation.

Oh, another excuse from Darisc. Imagine that.

You always going to insist you are just misunderstood.

It's math son-and you got it wrong. You shouldn't be telling anyone anything after your little display.

oh, and a reminder.the same 65% got it RIGHT as you like to say..
