Coyote. I had no clue until a couple of years ago, but they've become a "problem" in this area too, and it's a fairly recent development.

I see them almost every day, often as roadkill. You really have to watch out for them on a motorcycle at night around here.

I believe the Eastern Coyote typically is a bigger animal that runs in smaller packs. More wolf DNA.

Don't worry about the horses. I have two horses and watch coyotes pass thru our pasture on a regular basis. Horses just ignore them and coyotes stay clear. 1300 lb horse vs 50 lb coyote.

Cats and Poodles might have a problem with them, but not Horses.
Signs around here put up by dads just to make the wife and kids feel good.

Lost fluffy white cat, named Fluffy, $50 reward.

Coyotes can't read.

I have heard that here in the east the coyotes are taking the place of wolves that are just about gone.

Many people around here put donkeys in their pastures to keep coyotes away from calves. I don't think the guy with horses would have a problem.

I kind of think about my little Walker dog. I was told by folks where I've asked to run her during off season that they have a coyote problem. Nothing yet, but I've heard them a time or two.

What do the donkeys do? They go wild and attack coyotes for no reason?

So how do you pronounce that, yot-ee?

I've never heard anyone say anything but ky-o-tee. And we have a few.

Taste like chicken....jump like a mofo when hit with a .22 long. Funner than shooting rats.

I've always pronounced it like Milt says, but thought the proper way "out west" was with two syllables. Ki-yote?

In Texas you see donkees in with the cattle all the time. They will both kick the hell out of coyotes who come in for the calfs as well as rattle snakes.
Drew, I don't think there's been a wolf west of the rockies in 100 years.. but they are coming!!!

I have seen Coyotes within a block of my house at 10 in the morning. I have been hearing they yelping at night around here, probably right after they found a house cat of poodle out at night. A year ago I was driving through a neighborhood in Irvine, nice homes, I saw a Coyote that looked like a show German Shepard, lots of cats and small dogs there. Fast food all over the place.

I have one that lives in my neighborhood. I last saw him last fall. He's mangy and undernourished--can't weigh more than 20 pounds. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't make it through the winter.

The coyotes in Death Valley have been fed by people for so long that they have no fear and expect handouts.

This little guy was sitting by the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. As soon as I drove by, he ran after us. I stopped a good 1/4 mile later and he came right up to the car. I had nothing for him and wouldn't have fed him if I had. But he posed for the photo and then we stiffed him.

Were you out of ammunition? Back in the day, they had a higher bounty than Apaches....

I had plenty of ammo with me then. No reason to shoot a coyote on federal land in such a gun-friendly state like KA.
