1969 $0.36 per gallon. I could actually a few gallons in the tank go to a movie and grab a burger afterwards for about $5.

Just the movies kills a 20 now... :(

Mid 60s in Fla. Gas at 25cents, bulk oil at 20 cents a quart. My buddy and I would jump into the fiat 600 with the back window and front pass seat out so the long boards could fit in. Riding front and back opposite the boards. daily stop at the discount station. A buck would see us set for the day. Used/spued a quart of oil per day. No problem with rust in the back of the car. Fun times

cheers Richard

I remember driving from Pittsburgh to Daytona Beach in a Honda Civic for about $30.00 in fuel. Roughly 1000 miles. Now it cost me $30 to go into the city and back.

In 1972 (when i was 16) the national average for a gal of gas was 0.36 per gal. That's about $1.88 in 2010 dollars (according to google)

March 2004... Somewhere around $1.50

I remember a date giving me $2. for gas to take her to a drive-in down in the 'valley'. She said she was getting a bad rep in Ventura. She never knew what the movie was about, and the car windows never defrosted. I always thought it was really because I had really stiff air shocks in back.

I remember about .20 cents/gallon. Price wars brought it down to .15-.18 at time. And you would get some free glasses/cookware/etc with a fill up.

It was 40 something for regular when I started driving. A few years later I was paying .75 for Sonoco 280 leaded gas and my big block Chevelle got  5  miles to the gallon. 396/375hp solid lifter cam, .30 overbore, 456 rear, 850 dbl pumper dual feed carb... What a rush! :D

As a 12 or so year old kid my friends and I travelled around the surrounding communities on our minibikes/minicycles. IIRC gas was maybe around 0.65 /gallon.

Just a couple years ago gas dropped all the way back down to $1.81 for a short time.... I bet current prices will go well below $3 again within a year from now.

in 1966 when i started driving, gas was about 32 cents a gallon in westchester, but if you drove over the border to greenwich, you could get it for 27.

rouxroux 04-20-2011 11:35 AM

I remember 30 cents/gal, although on one vacation I saw 19 cents/gal in a town that was having a "gas war"...My dad used to bring me 5 gal of avgas home for free every week after they would do tests at their "fuel farm".

This is an interesting question, as the whole world seems to think gas is expensive right now, while many people right around my age don't. I started driving in 1981 - the previous adjusted-for-inflation high....

In 1981 gas was about $1.50, and a nicely-optioned 911 about $30k. Both are about 3x more right now, and I guess deep down I think gas should cost about what it does, and was always a bit uncomfortable thinking it was remarkably cheap until now - kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop....

Strange how initial conditions alter your outlook on things....

'97/98 I remember gas prices being pretty low. Around the Seattle area, you could get gas for les than a buck a gallon.

I'm now seeing gas well over $4/gal here in the Seattle area.

I guess I'm "off the charts." $0.29 Getting $5.00 worth of gas in a 20 gallon tank was challenging.
