How much was gas when you started driving?

Ok, so I was talking to a younger guy at a gig the other day and the price of gas came up. He mentioned that he's never paid lower than ~ $2.30/gal.

I was a bit shocked considering I actually remember ~$1.15/gal when I started driving. And that wasn't really that long ago.

Of course, an older guy overhears the conversation and says he remembers it being less than $0.50/gal.

Naturally, I can't even imagine that and then I thought he must have been older than I thought.

Around a buck a gallon.

I'm betting by this time next year it'll be pushing $7 or $8.

mossguy 04-20-2011 09:43 AM

0.18/gal regular. Premium was 0.20

I remember 25 cents...pack of smokes out of the service station's vending machine also took a quarter. Yup, I'm so old I can remember when dirt was rocks.

But then, I can also say I had a brand new '65 Pontiac G.T.O. :)

Then there were "gas wars"...a surplus of gas had prices being cut all over town...think I remember 17.9 cents for regular.

November, 1972.

36 cents a gallon. I remember making sure everyone in the car pitched in a dollar for gas on a Friday night.

$4.00

Roll.

I remember it to be a little bit more than a dollar a gallon. Once on a trip through New Jersey I remember being shocked when I saw gas was $0.76 a gallon. I think that was in the late '90s.

I'm with Seahawk. Started driving MY car in 1970. Worked at a Texaco. Posted price was $ .33 a gallon. I got a dime off for working there, taken out of my pay BEFORE TAXES....... yes, those were the good 'ole days. Gas wars would get the price down to $ .20-ish. This was Oxnard, California.

Had to laugh at a later post. There was no such thing as unleaded. 'Low Test and High Test.' Low was 92. High was 100, later lowered to 98 and 92.

RANDY P 04-20-2011 09:56 AM

$.89 / gallon

Leaded was still available too.

VINMAN 04-20-2011 09:59 AM

1981, I remember it being somewhere in the high 70 cent range in NYC. I was also working in a Mobil station. so those numbers stick in my mind.

Gas Wars, I remember them well. But I remember paying under 19 cents a gallon through 1970 at MCAF El Toro (LTA). And that was before the Newport Freeway went through. I don't ever recognize the place anymore.

Danimal16 04-20-2011 10:01 AM

Leaded was available??? It sure was and at Chevron you could get over 100 octane, the real stuff. Oh those were some high powered and smoggy days.

64-65...I was 9 and and a gallon of gas for my montgomery ward moped was about 3 coke bottles or a couple golf balls. we got 6 cents for returned bottles and 5-10 cents for every lost golfball we found, cleaned and resold. regular was $0.17 a gallon. sometimes I'd hit the gas pumps after closing, stretch the pump hoses out and drain the little bit left in each one into a bottle and add to my tank. sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do to keep rollin.. and when my father stored a drum of aviation fuel for his plane behind the house, I learned how to siphon gas with a piece of hose

29.9 for regular, Chevron Custom Supreme (over 100 octane) 39.9. My Dad had a Chevron Station.

I was in MY car (1959 VW that I bought for $156.00 american) rolling around Thousand Oaks/Newbury Park. We lived up Protrero Road from Camarillo...no better place.

You owe me money!!!

Summer out of HS...gas station I worked at (yes, full service!) 25 cents a gallon.

GH85Carrera 04-20-2011 10:22 AM

I can remember rolling up to the Service Station, a guy walks out, pumps my 21 cents per gallon gas, checks the oil, checks the tire pressure, washes the windshield and asked about my family. I never had to get out of the car.

My 1960 VW bug did not have a gas guage. I don't mean it was broken, it did not have one. The car did not have one from the factory. I had a woden dowel I cut notches in to check the gas level. I remember feeling outrage when it cost more than $2.50 for a full tank! At 36 MPG that was two weeks of driving. I remember gas wars and paying 14 cents per gallon. I only needed 4 gallons at the time :(

On Friday night if everyone threw in a quarter we could drive for the entire weekend.
