2005 and up Mustang cluster problems?

I have a 2005 mustang and recently the speedometer quit working.I called the dealer and I was told it needs new cluster,cost 800$.Luckily I have experience wih these units from general motors,as they had similar problems.
I managed to fix mine,but the point is how can you have a design flaw like this and get away with it?
Anybody else out there having this problem with their 05 and up mustang clusters,or 03 and up GM car?

My room mate had an ~04 Chevy truck and it went out... He paid the dealer to fix it....

Timely, I go in Monday morning for a new instrument cluster on my Cayenne. Guess it's brand agnostic.
