maybe they are thinking: "hey that Vanagon has an engine swap"

The highway miles shouldn't be where the Prius shines. The low drag and small body help on the highway, but I doubt the hybrid tech is worth anything. The weight of the hybrid tech may actually hurt at highway speeds.

The city is where it looks so attractive. I'd get one if I needed a car. Unfortunately, I need a pickup.

Weight only affects acceleration and deceleration.
At a constant speed, it doesn't matter if the car weighs 1000# or 4000#.

Wind Resistance is by far the largest force to overcome at highways speeds and is squared as speed increases, iffn I remember that formula right ............

Mr. sammyg2 is correct.

The gub'ment....sorry....insurance mafia is why the 550 Spyder could never be sold as a new car today.

I guess if you live where there are no hills, then no problem. Agree on wind resistance, but more weight cannot help fuel mileage.

Dunno why the volume of hate is so great upon the Pious. Sure, you can get cars that get similar mileage on the highway, but the hybrids stomp in the city.

On the other hand, when my parents were shopping for a car, I reviewed the Fusion hybrid vs gasoline models. The purchase premium was too high to justify the Fusion hybrid. Would have taken well over 100k miles to break even. The reason being the hybrid traded near sticker and the gas versions were well under invoice. It would be interesting to see a comparison of the Prius hybrid and an identical Prius gasoline model.

Wasn't the genI Prius and Echo almost the same car?

Why hell, go ahead...yep I'm a low annual miles retired goat. I do sympathize with the poor working stiffs who must commute 40 miles or more to a job. It is they who are going to suffer...

It's the smug prius types who voted for "hope and change"...now they get even more smug as they putt about in near silence.

But to try to drive one as if it were performance iron? Like Angela said...a poodle humping a pillow. :D

Pretty weird to think it's cool to post about passing other cars...That's an every day thing for many folks, isn't it?

jyl 04-25-2011 03:40 PM

No, they were not.

it must have been automatic system response to Paulie PARFing up the thread

Rest assured $100-$150 to fill a gas tank bothers me not at all...and I let crazies pass me all the time. Let 'em think they "beat" me as I follow 1/4 mile or more back...making good time & letting them pick up the radar or laser.

Oh yeah, the Prius is sooo cool. I'm sure everybody here secretly lusts for one.

mattdavis11 04-25-2011 04:54 PM

My company car is a Prius, an 07. I'm not that thrilled with it, although it hasn't needed any maintenance until today. The inverter cooling pump expired, but it's a recall item.

In windy conditions, you get blown all over the place, they hydroplane pretty easily even with new tires, and the mileage is about 34mpg mixed. I put 50K on it last year, gas dropped 5mpg in that time. The combination meter has been acting up, Toyota wouldn't sell me a new one even if they had it, the constant velocity transmission hangs sometimes keeping the motor wound up, and the catalytic converter is shot. 156k miles.

There's a 2010 in the fleet too, I don't like it at all. The interior design is definitely a down grade in my opinion.

If I wanted to save on gas I'd get one of these:
200 HP K20 Powered Honda Insight |

Prius threads are always funny. I get a kick out of how many people's self-image is wrapped up in their cars, I feel sorry for them.

I currently have 20K miles on a 2010 Prius. I bought it because there is no other car that does what I need. If there was, I would have bought it.

Honest 40-50+ mpg in real world driving. Must get at least 30 or so in what it's used for most of the time, which is trips of less than 2 miles.
0-60 under 10 seconds.
Mid-size or larger interior, carrying 4 people comfortably and 5 in a pinch.
Hatchback with folding seats, big enough to carry a 911 hood, front and rear RSR bumpers, ducktail and a cardboard box of lenses and other parts. Or a full size Christmas tree inside.
The usual modern stuff like airbags, ABS, bluetooth, GPS, iPod/USB ports, etc.

It actually accelerates pretty well, and the solar roof is awesome. It can be parked in direct sunlight in 90 degree heat and it's comfy inside using no power at all.

What it sucks at is handling. Much like a Camry or Insight or Yaris or whatever, they dial in tons of understeer and then the low rolling resistance tires and soft suspension make it even worse. I truly wish they made a "R" version (lol) that had better handling.

Anyway, that's my real world observation from someone that actually owns one and has put a bunch of miles on it. I'm probably one of the most conservative guys on the board, think MMGW is an evil joke, and if someone tries to put an Obama sticker on my car they'll spend the next few days laying on the couch with a bag of ice on their nose. I own 4 cars and they are all good at something. A Prius does what it does really well. If you need to a car to compensate for some shortcoming you have, go buy a Mustang. :D

JavaBrewer 04-26-2011 12:52 PM

Screw the Mustang...I want Voodoo Child. You can keep the Prius :)
