Just wondering...

Easiest way.
The neighbor's dumb as a stump terrier comes over and watches my red heeled getting treats for tricks. She's slowly picking them up. I've seen it happen often enough. When a new dog comes into the house, the original dog will show them the ropes. When to eat, where to poop, what furniture it's okay to sleep on, etc. |

Trick question. The dog is the one training you (and it doesn't even have to rely on a book called "Human Training for Dummies").

So the dog relies on the reinforcement from the master if only a task is complete. Does the new dog watch and follow by example the other dog due to alpha surpremacy? Must be - dogs don't reward dogs with snacks and belly rubs. No?

Sure! My cattle dog taught my other dog how to dig up the yard, and chew my boots, and rip the wiring out of my lawn tractor, and take things out of the garage and bury them, etc, etc....

My mom has border collies. When she was very active with herding competitions (mostly cattle herding) the older dogs definately "taught" the younger ones. The young ones watched the older ones work. Then she started the young ones out herding ducks, then sheep, saving the cattle for last. With the sheep and cattle, she could put two dogs, an old experienced one and a young one together. At that point, the young one did understand the commands, just didn't have alot of savvy. Sometimes they'd get excited and blunder in, scattering the critters everywhere. That would generally earn a grade A azzwhupping from the older dog. Usually only happened once. After that, the young dog would REALLY watch the older one and emulate their behavior.
Without a doubt, a dog can teach another dog. angela

I knew a guy down under who had a pig that could herd sheep. Wait, that was a movie we did.
