Could This Electric Sports Car Change Detroit?

Design News - Captain Hybrid - Slideshow: Detroit Electric Unveils 'World's Fastest' Electric Sports Car

Quote:
Detroit Electric, which shipped its last electric car in 1939, will relaunch sales in August with an EV that accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 3.7 seconds and hits a top speed of 155mph. Company representatives say the $135,000 vehicle will be targeted at buyers who want performance first and electric technology second.
I'm thinking not...yet.

I wonder what % of all car buyers are looking at $135,000 cars or above?

Because it looks like a Tesla/Lotus that has already been done or the price?

Fast charging IS an advantage, reduced gearing and gears add to accleration, 180miles on a charge isn't bad.....of course 180 miles is subjective.

There is good reason for that:

"The Detroit Electric brand was revived in 2008 by Albert Lam, former CEO of the Lotus Engineering Group"

Saw that.....but Tesla stopped their model because Lotus ran out of bodies. So did they make a special run for DE?

Good question because it sure looks like it's based on the same chassis.

I see lots of claims and flash, but no real substance. I'll be surprised if they get to true production by 2014, and even more surprised if they become profitable. Tesla is struggling with the same model, Fisker is nearly dead. Why will the next electric toy be any more successful?

What a perfectly stupid idea.

The idea that Detroit is going to be a manufacturing center is toxic. Its a dead horse that people refuse to bury.

I've been to some sad towns but Mo Town takes it - lost city of lost dreams. There is no way on God's green Earth that car will sell to any volume. For that price you can get a serious ride. I mean a very serious ride.

I wouldn't spend more than 30K on an electric car that looks like a priou or a volt or a leaf...- and yes I know the cost break and what have you.

I suspect it's a ploy to get some of those tasty government subsidies by invoking ghost of Detroit and the spectre of electric cars in the same breath.

For what I know Elon Musk has blown thru his entire PayPal fortune, has borrowed, and some say stole the remaining capitol and the company is still not profitable. So why do others think they can succeed in this arena??

BTW, there is one Tesla big sedan that I see commuting on Rt 66 from Northern, Va. towards DC daily. That thing must have cost that guy what a new BMW 750 costs + a new Cayman for the wife
