Movies that changed your life

Please, think hard about this. And just one contribution per post. If anyone says Caddyshack, I'm gonna ride over there and call you a poopyhead to your face, in person.

I'm not looking for just good or great movies. I'd like to hear about movies that had a real impact on your life or way of thinking. I'd love to hear why, as well.

My contribution: The Thin Red Line

This movie is an amazing experience and haunts me. I watch it every few years with a good set of quality headphones to really experience it. Simply amazing. Terrence Malick does a tremendous job of capturing the beauty of life and the horror or war. Makes me value life and appreciate the small, everyday beauty that life offers, but man chooses to ignore.

Three come to mind but the stand out for me is "Saving Private Ryan".

Blade Runner
Rocky 1
Saving Private Ryan

Funniest movie ever. "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"

can't youse guys read? 1 per post.

Rollerball. They can destroy everything around you. But they can't destroy you unless you let them. Triumph of the individual and all that. As a side note, confirms the idea that spectator sports are just another way to placate the populace.

thin red line. so much better than 'saving private ryan'. the poetry of everyone losing the very thing they prized the most. beautiful movie, without the grandstanding moralizing of 'ryan'.

the movie that stands out most for me....

blade runner. the original, not the crap that was deemed 'directors cut'.

More specifically... The "Omaha Beach" scene in "Saving Private Ryan".

>>> The part when they drop the ramp on a landing craft and a Germans machine gunner opens up on the soldiers inside.
None of them stood a chance. Didn't even make to the beach.

LEST WE FORGET.

"Forrest Gump". I worked on it and was wondering at the start "Why is Tom Hanks talking in that stupid accent?". After watching the finished product I never second guessed a director's ability or actors performance.

It taught me that things happen in life for a reason and have the ability to turn out positive no matter what or how hard I try to "spin" it.

Lonesome Dove. The miniseries. Everything you will ever need to know about being a man is in that film. Honor, courage, duty and love. Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Danny Glover, Diane Lane, Angelica Huston. Fantastic.

Hmm. I hated Thin Red Line. But for the same "horrors of war" reason, I definitely remember Midway making an impact on me. Watching pilots get shot up or burned in their cockpits was/is sobering. Suddenly being a fighter pilot wasn't so romantic, like it seemed on Black Sheep Squadron.

The "good vs. evil" movies always get me. Without thinking about your question for hours, the most impactful movie I can think of is "No Country for Old Men".

It nails the classic good vs. evil bit, but also throws in all sorts of questions about causality. If you watch the scene with Anton Chigurh, the gas station owner, and the quarter a few times, and start to really think about it, your head will explode.

That, or I'm just easily entertained. Which tends to be true.

Cast Away with Tom Hanks. Talk about manning up! You're on your own. Deal with what you have at hand. I'm all about that.
