Alison Krauss (w Tony Rice) "Shadows"
Recently I've been getting into bluegrass/country music. In that genre I don't think it gets much better than Alison Krauss... In this performance she teams up with Tony Rice to do a version of Gordon Lightfoot's "Shadows".

She is one of my favs - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvKtxTsVoMo
I thought I read somewhere that she has earned more awards or some sort of thing - regardless she has some chops.

Thanks, she's got the voice of an angel. I've always loved Tony Rice's playing and Dan Tyminski on the mandolin is no slouch, and a great voice to boot.

She knocks me right out, Plus all of the Union Station players are masterful. Especially the slide and lap steel player. Can't think of his name right now. defiantly worth a close listen!!!

Her duet with Brad Paisley in "Whiskey Lullaby" is one of my all time favorites.

I found out about her after she sang the Keith Whitley tribute song: "When You Say Nothing At All".....what a great song. She does have the voice of an angel.

It's funny how many of the hardcore Punk musicians later turned to bluegrass with respect for the music. There was an article I read somewhere, have to see if I can find it.

One of the best Bluegrass bands ever was "Old and in the Way" from the early 70s. I saw them live many times, once in a bar in Eureka Ca with maybe 35 other people. Jerry Garcia on banjo/lead guitar and David Grisman on mandolin. YouTube has some great clips.

She's one of my favorites. I loved her teaming with Robert Plant too. I still have an Old and In the Way album. Don't know how many they produced.

Wonderful stuff! I'm a big fan of both AKUS and Tony Rice - looks like he's playing Clarence White's famous Martin in this clip. Great to see Jerry Douglas working up close - and Ron Block, who usually is on banjo, is a terrifically underrated picker. Thanks for posting this.

Here's a documentary on the Clifftop Music Festival. This is the one featured in the article with the musicians I was talking about (One was one of the Ramones).

I like Plant from the LedZep days and I like Kraus's work, but somehow you put them together and it's downright PAINFUL to listen to.

I love Alison Krauss.
And I have seen Dan Tyminski in concert (solo, not with Union Station). I've also seen Nickle Creek.

If your are starting to dabble in the genre check out Gillian Welch & David Rawlings. They are memorizing live.

You had me at Gordon Lightfoot. I really like Ms Krause too, so I had to click the link. Thanks. I loved it!
I have to say though, I don't connect her music with bluegrass - she is too sophisticated. Bluegrass is like rock and roll - it's of the people and when it gets refined it becomes something else. It's great and I love it, but it's something else. I remember hearing an interview with some 80's hair band moron who talked about his music as rock and roll art. WHAT? Rock and Roll is the antithesis of art. Its appeal is that it is stupid, loud fun. Calling it "art" diminishes it. Louie Louie is one of the greatest R&R songs ever. If I ever hear some expert peering over his glasses and explaining the social significance and nuanced meaning of the lyrics of Louie Louie I'll whack him over the head with his champagne flute. It's Rock and Roll. It's fun. It doesn't have to be anything else.
