I did a strenuous leg workout (leg press, squats, leg extensions then cardio) once in a dress shirt, gabardine wool slacks and Mezlan shoes - I took the tie off.

My office buddy was literally in tears because he was stuck in a rut of booze and bad habits and quit going to the gym so I made him go right there and then. Jump start.

People remembered me there after that day.

Ruger LCP in a DeSantis Nemesis holster works for us...

Rick Lee 05-01-2011 10:08 AM

I know some cops work out at my gym and I can't make out any weapons on them when they're there. But random mass shootings happen several times a year and they tend to only happen where everyone else is unarmed and the madman knows he'll face no armed resistance. When my number is up, I want it to be something that was 100% unavoidable, not something a little preparation and situational awareness could have prevented.

I carry a Keltec P3AT in the original case with a spare mag. This is then inserted in a 1qt Ziplock bag, left open at the top. Not a fast draw, but at least I have something with me.

OK, some nut can start randomly shooting people anywhere. I get it. The odds of it happening to me are slightly less than winning the lottery twice in one day but hey, if you feel the need to carry everywhere you go, knock yourself out. I like my chances better of somehow squirming out of the room if I'm not the first one or two shot better than being in the middle of a fire fight between you and the madman but that's just me. And if you're one of the first one or two shot in a *surprise!* situation, it doesn't matter if you are in a police station or on a NATO base. You're toast.

I would say that a gym is probably the safest place on earth right now in regards to random mass murder. What are the chances of that happening twice? One in 2 billion the the 8th power??

red-beard 05-01-2011 02:05 PM

Denis,

Nice smarmy attitude. And good luck with your ideas. Try to be helpful next time when you post.

I wish your calculations were accurate, but the chance that a person in the USA is involved in a situation where a gun will be useful, is a lot better than 300,000,000 to 1.

Temo, any of the suggestions are good, but again I suggest you put the bag around your pistol to protect it from sweat, just like you would do for your cell phone.

Why? Seriously...

I bicycle about 100 miles a weekend. Some of the areas we ride through are remote. And some of the areas we ride through are sketchy. We do not ride through anyplace that is REALLY bad, but you never know.

I am more concerned with wildlife than wild people. We have coyotes, wild dogs and bobcats in the areas we ride.

All of this aside, in 2008, in a good area, on a bicycle trail a person training for the MS150 was shot when he was confronted by three people trying to steal his bicycle.

I'm not sure that's a good argument at all.

If you feel you need to carry you should carry 100% of the time IMO. I don't/can't carry but on my evening walks I wish I could... But were does it stop?
If I truly felt a need to carry I would and I would have to do it illegally.

-----------------------------------------

The other night I was walking near my house and I live near a football oval. There were people parking their cars and walking to the stadium.

As I passed people walking I couldn't help but feel a certain tension in the air. I kept thinking it would have been reassuring to be carrying.
There are so many people assaulted or molested at the football that it's becoming ridiculous.
Almost every week we hear about someone going missing or being seriously assaulted because they were wearing an opposing team scarf or whatever.
The police seem to be powerless to do anything about it. Was I being paranoid? Probably yes...
But one thing I do know is some seriously demented wankers go to the football and I wouldn't want to bump into any of them after they've had a few drinks and their team has lost.

I think it's your left. No, maybe your right. You're right if you guess both. But I do carry left, because it's my right.

Joe Bob 05-01-2011 04:02 PM

I carry on the the left....I like a cross draw, doesn't interfere with the seat belt and is next to the door so less likely to be observed......

Rick Lee 05-01-2011 04:12 PM

I don't carry at the gym. I always carry to it, but leave my sidearm locked up in my sidecase or locker. As much as I'd like to have it with me all the time, it's just practical there, where I always have earphones in and there's such a large space and wall of windows. I let my situational awareness slide for that hour or so.

Joe Bob 05-01-2011 04:22 PM

I remember reading back in the day, Science Fiction where they were able to modify a flap in the epidermis to allow for a concealed organic based knife.

Always thought that be now, it could be done....

I have one of my many grab guns in a modified holster clipped onto the side of my toilet bowl.

I do NOT want to be caught with my pants down.

It wasn't more than a week after I clipped it on that at three o'clock one morning, half asleep, I sat down to do #2, looked up, saw a stranger in the dim light, grabbed the gun and shot myself in the mirror.

Seriously, I would love to carry a Kalashnikov when I ride my bicycle. Perhaps then I would get a little respect..

Better yet Chinese Uzi's seem to be 75% plastic and a hell of a lot lighter.

I have a sawn-off clipped to the frame next to the pump. Means I cant carry a drink bottle but it seems such a small price to pay for the peace of mind. Last Saturday I had to ride through the local park on my way to the bagel shop- and there was a football game on. I was seriously glad I was packing heat, some of those under 14s are freaking huge. And meth crazed.

Whilst I will grant you that Adelaide is a very odd town, you may have been here (PP) too long.

Ah, ya just got sour grapes because we beat you at the basketball - on your own turf no less.
