Live music in Portland OR.

I know there is a lot going on in Portland Oregon music wise.

On another thread one of the PNW folks posted seeing Robin Trower in Portland, and my friend who lives there saw Dan Hicks.

I visit Portland almost monthly, what are some good venues? Can you post some links?

So far I have only been to Keller (nice but more geared toward plays and musicals) I curious about RnR, jazz, bluegrass, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Ask where "Storm Large" is performing...From what I've heard, you'll see one heck of a show!

Bagdad Theater
Roseland
Crystal Ballroom

Those are the three kinda bigger venues in the city, they play a decent variety of stuff.

Check the Willamette Weekly and the Portland Mercury for shows. You're sure to find something.

Also, anything McMennamins branded should net you some good results.

Portland has a pretty wide variety of stuff, but you sometimes have to look off the beaten track.

Check out Pink Martini if they are playing in town.

Hard to say... me, I'm all over the map... from heavy metal to jazz to classical.

Wife is the limiting factor... we listen to classic rock... she also likes acoustic guitar/vocals... old school country, and soft jazz.

I should add that we are about half a block from the Greenway McMenamins (they don't have music there AFAIK.)

And I am usually in Portland (Beaverton) from Friday to Sunday once or twice a month.

Thanks!

While not Music, check out Cars and coffee on Saturday Morning:

For all of those would be attendees of the Portland Cars and Coffee, I received the following with info about a venue change. This new location is not too far away and will take effect on May 7th. This Starbucks is located just south of the Tigard Home Depot and near West Marine and Tap Plastics. Here's the notice from the Ferrari forum:

For almost three years we have been meeting at Bridgeport for cars and coffee, but the time has come to move to a new location. For months now the traffic and congestion has been steadily growing to the point where more and more owners have concerns about coming out. And with just cause, one car recently was door dinged and this owner (at one time a regular) has not been seen since. So we have decided to move about a mile away to the Starbucks on Sequoia Parkway. This is a secluded parking lot that is completely abandoned on the weekends. Property management has given us approval and full access to the parking area. Starbucks is also excited to have us coming in on Saturdays. The parking lot in mind sits behind the building to the East, and will support upwards of 150 cars with plenty of spillover to the North. In scouting this location I have only seen the occasional lawn crew and once a large truck that was unloading.

Our move date is set for May 7th. This puts it after Canon Beach so everyone will be able to attend. We are also extending the time to 11 am for those who want to sleep in. We should probably stay clear of the West and South parking area and leave it for the “in and out” traffic and hotel customers.

Thanks to Kevin Cornwell for starting the Cars and Coffee and all he has put into it.

See everyone at Startbucks on May 7th.

ask the bartender at the McMenamins

and pick up a Willy Week and look thru WITH the wife

Willamette Week

Crystal Ballroom – 1332 W. Burnside – 503/2250047 McMenamins - Crystal Ballroom Home
1,500 person floating floor on ball bearings and rockers; high arched windows, rococo paintings
opened in 1914 as Cotillion Hall but you could be arrested then for dancing the Tango; closed in 1968 until renovated by McMenamins
- historical shrine you should visit

Jimmie Mack's - has a web site; NO SOFT jazz!!!

Metropolis

Satyricon – 125 NW 6th –featured Nirvana & Soul Asylum before they were famous; now if a mellower neo/post/punk stage

Jazz de Opus – 33 NW 2nd – jazz club in the heart of Old Town since 1972; now with upstairs eatery, Opus Too

to be honest, I don't know where to tell you to go for soft jazz (except hell)

hope you have a good time and can improve your wife's musical taste!

She has good taste... she just doesn't have a clue... if I mentioned John Hiatt to her she would have no idea what I'm talking about... but if we went to his show I'm certain she would like it.

She went to a George Winston concert... anyhoo.

It will probably be like my old girlfriend "you want to go see who?"

After a few concerts she told me "just buy the tickets and tell me when it is"

Word is that Portland is a pretty good music town. I don't get out much but Rwebb nailed it with the Willamette Week recommendation. I bet they have a website with listings as well. The Oregonian should as too. Another weekly newspaper is The Mercury - it is less geriatric than the previously mentioned papers.

I hear Jimmie Maks (sp?) is the premier jazz club in town but haven't been. Lots and lots of blues here. Most in small divey bars, which is good and personal. For blues and jazz i would check KMHD - it is a jazz / blues radiostation located around 87 - 89 on FM. Great friday show after 4. Not to be missed if you like blues. They also advertise a list of blues events every Friday.

Keep us posted. Live music is one of my favorite things ever and I never enjoy it. Maybe you will kick me in the rear and get me out some.

Thanks for asking.

If you don't feel like hanging out in a crowd wearing jeans and tshirts, here is a pretty good spot for some music and other entertainment. Live jazz, big band and such.

Tony Starlights Supper Club - Lounge

Parking is terrible, so bring someone else's car.
