Did they get it in the air?

ckissick 05-11-2011 04:45 PM

The thing has no elevator. How did they control up/down?

Power?

I'm not a pilot, but it seems that I've heard that power controls altitude and the elevator determines attitude. Or something like that.

The original had one:

Pause the video. It's there.

Controls......

The wings were flexible enough for the cable actuated controls to cause them to warp to allow for turns. The front elevator I believe controlled the elevation. By the way, the propellers carved by the Wright brothers have been claimed to be the most efficient props ever made.

Just think how quickly the airplane evolved in 50 years!

Oh, and lowly bike shop mechanics destined it!

100 years?

1910-2011

Jim Bremner 05-11-2011 07:20 PM

yes, but in 50 years it evolve REALLY quickly from that to supersonic in 50 years. props to jets

The silver tube up high is the gas tank? Gravity feed?

You'd have to be a brave soul to fly that thing.

tcar 05-12-2011 02:12 PM

Yes gravity feed gas, like all cars were at the time.

Yes no ailerons, they had 'wing warping'. First plane to do that, all the earlier tries by others had none and they had to 'skid' around turns with just a rudder (were gliders). Were very unstable.

The 'bicycle mechanics' built their own engine, they could not find one light enough and powerful enough available anywhere.

Built their own wind tunnel, a first, I think. That's how they developed wing warping.

That's a copy of the later 'deluxe' model... it has seats; the original, the pilot laid on his belly on the wing.

It has an elevator, go here and click on photos: http://www.wright-b-flyer.org/

The original had the elevator on the front.

The cross-section of the prop is exactly scaled from the Wright wing.

The wind tunnel first came around in 1871, in England.

Here's another one - I actually know some of the guys working on this one:

Honoring the Wright Brothers: The AIAA Wright Flyer Project

...and just WOW! ....ever get the feeling that the wheels, of the progress-wagon, are about to fly off?

romad 05-13-2011 05:52 AM

I know a guy whose close to this project
