The thing has no elevator. How did they control up/down?

Power?
I'm not a pilot, but it seems that I've heard that power controls altitude and the elevator determines attitude. Or something like that.

Controls......
The wings were flexible enough for the cable actuated controls to cause them to warp to allow for turns. The front elevator I believe controlled the elevation. By the way, the propellers carved by the Wright brothers have been claimed to be the most efficient props ever made.

Just think how quickly the airplane evolved in 50 years!
Oh, and lowly bike shop mechanics destined it!

The silver tube up high is the gas tank? Gravity feed?
You'd have to be a brave soul to fly that thing.

Yes gravity feed gas, like all cars were at the time.
Yes no ailerons, they had 'wing warping'. First plane to do that, all the earlier tries by others had none and they had to 'skid' around turns with just a rudder (were gliders). Were very unstable. The 'bicycle mechanics' built their own engine, they could not find one light enough and powerful enough available anywhere. Built their own wind tunnel, a first, I think. That's how they developed wing warping. That's a copy of the later 'deluxe' model... it has seats; the original, the pilot laid on his belly on the wing. It has an elevator, go here and click on photos: http://www.wright-b-flyer.org/ The original had the elevator on the front. Last edited by tcar; 05-12-2011 at 01:23 PM.. |

The wind tunnel first came around in 1871, in England.
