Rock Religious Ecstacy - Neil Young
OK,
So maybe its a Canadian thing, and admittedly the theory was formed after a lot of h*sh in a dorm room, but about 20 years ago, my buddy and I came to the rock and roll conclusion that Neil Young is "God". ![]() I'm expecting to have another religious experience at Massey Hall in Toronto tomorrow night. 10th row centre floors at the greatest venue in Canada! Neil is 65 years old and has survived a brain injury to return as powerful as ever. When he starts tearing thru riffs it is unlike anything else in Rock and Roll today. His guitar fills the room and tears right thru you. I've seen a lot of aging rock icons in the last few years and no one has the kind of commitment that Neil still has. He is one of those love him or hate him artists. 99% of women say he is ugly and they hate his music. 75% of guys I know say he sucks. Its that last 25% of true music lovers who recognize the musical genius who come to see Neil and experience the master at his craft. Come tomorrow night, I plan to light one up, loosen up my air guitar limbs, stretch my neck and get ready for ecstasy! ![]()

Have you ever made it to one of his "Bridge School" concerts? Definitely worth a trip.

I have always liked Neil's music, just not when he gets political.
We saw him in San Diego once, he was sitting on stage playing and he stopped, sat his guitar down and said -I'm up here sitting down, there are a lot of people in the back that can's see what's going on because you people in front are standing up and jumping around, if you don't sit down I'm not playing. I really liked him more after that, and it was real cloudy in that place. |

I do agree, he can get over the top. The one Neil concert I too my wife to was the "Bush-war" concert and it turned her off for good.
Oh well....he does what he wants as an artist. He is foregiven in my books

I can only agree. Do let us know what set he played. I cherish his DVD/CD at Massey Hall in 71. Forty years later he comes back. Unreal.

Having seen Neil many times in el lay since the 70's, my hope for you is that he will shut up and sing. Leave the politics out of it - he's a much better poetic and musician than pundit!

My wife hates him. I think he's one of the most talented song writers ever. I also have a huge amount of respect for the way he has followed his heart and never sold out in any way to anyone. He has always done whatever he dam well pleases.

BTW - if you can ever get your hands on a copy of "I'm Happy That Y'all Came Down" - the bootleg name - you wil be a happy man. It was recorded just before the release of Harvest - they even got some of the song names are even wrong.
I had a bootleg copy of the (2 disk) set in the 70's - I heard you can get it on CD/DVD now if you look hard, but it may be under a different name. It was recorded at the Dorothy Chandler PAvillion in late 69/early 70. It is the same as (or contemporaneous with) this you tube video.

Used to be a big fan....the politics and the more recent albums...I just can't get into. Always liked the variety, lately its just sounds phoned it.

Neil rocks!!! Not familiar with his later stuff (but do have a bunch), and particularly with Crazy Horse...Neil rocks like no other, and his acoustic stuff doesn't suck either imo...

I have loved Neil Young for as long as I can remember. Only seen him once, at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans, back around 1998 or 99. It was awesome. Just him, about 10 guitars, harmonica, a piano and an organ. He was awesome. Very engaging with the audience. Sort of took requests, a few people shouted a few songs, and he'd play them. Told stories between songs. did I mention it was awesome?
Have you heard Greendale? I think it is an awesome, one the greatest Crazy Horse endeavors in a long time. Has the movie to go with it. you can stream the music form his website. Here's a youtube link to the first song from that album- Falling from Above. It starts abouyt 2 minutes in. (No embedding this one). [URL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIydPPPj_wk"] |

I've also seen Neil play numerous times in the "old" days. When he plays acoustical, it just doesn't get any better. When he amps it and tries to hit notes humans can't hear, it doesn't get any worse. I saw him once in LA and it looked like half the audience had their fingers stuck in their ears. Another time in Northern California we were at a small bar listening to the local band play. They took a break, and when they came back on, Neil walked out and started playing with them. Blew everyone away.

Thanks JPD! Rob, there's nothin' better than when a "star" pops in for a bar set! A great Nawlin's funk band was playing a local bar (packed w/ 125 folks) when Ivan and Ian Neville dropped in and played the last set with 'em...it don't get no better
