Something strange here

About five years ago a guy started building this "house" out in a fairly remote area near here. I drive by it about every day on my way to town, so I've watched it. He did most of the work himself on weekends. From the time I saw the framing it looked strange. There are NO windows, just two garage doors and three people doors. There are also some electrical boxes on it that aren't typically used on residences around here. Our meter bases are about a foot square and the system is normally designed so an external disconnect is not needed. I don't know what the other boxes and vents would be for.
I never see anyone around, never see any lights on, and the grounds aren't kept up well. I'm all for leaving people alone, but what if there are Jeffery Dahmer style barrels of body parts stacking up in there, or a bunch of foreigners are making bombs? Heck, Osama could have been in there. It's beginning to creep me out.

Grow house.

azasadny 05-16-2011 02:59 AM

Porsche garage...

DanielDudley 05-16-2011 03:24 AM

Wait, I saw this movie.

Was the guy wearing a Goalie mask ?

Porsche-O-Phile 05-16-2011 03:29 AM

You sure it's not being built as a telco switch building? A lot of times those are located in residential areas and the towns require efforts be made to have them at least sorta appear residential, but for obvious reasons (typically unmanned infrastructure) they can't have blatant exploitable points of access like windows. Just a thought - Ive designed several of these and that's kind of what it reminds me of, especially if there are large elec cabinets with disconnects... Oversized HVAC and/or undersized (or non-existent) plumbing would also be signs. Utility equipment generates a fair amount of heat.

If it's clearly a private party I'm guessing grow house or meth lab.

Gretch 05-16-2011 03:40 AM

why can't people mind their own fuggin business...............

Not enough exhaust venting for a grow-op.

Geronimo '74 05-16-2011 04:04 AM

The guy's a vampire.

sc_rufctr 05-16-2011 04:16 AM

That is weird but it doesn't mean something unlawful is going on inside.

It's too obvious to be a grow house. The lack of windows makes it stick out like "dogs balls".
A wild guess... What about tobacco drying or something like that?

And how would you know Mark? ;)

Mark Henry 05-16-2011 05:19 AM

I knew someone with a full blown BC bud grow-op, this person has been dead (unrelated) for a few years. They would never do something that obvious, unless it was a legal (medical) grow-op.

drcoastline 05-16-2011 05:24 AM

Why is moisture seeping through the block around the electical box but no where else? That's wierd. Why is there two dryer vents?

Mark Henry 05-16-2011 05:33 AM

Dryer vents are to small for a large grow-op and cloudy day, may have just rained.
Looks more like a bikers clubhouse.

That makes sense. But don't they usually have tall walls around their properties?

DARISC 05-16-2011 05:44 AM

Have you looked to see who owns the property? I think it's a matter of public record.

Paul_Heery 05-16-2011 05:54 AM

If it were a grow house or clubhouse, I would expect to see surveillance cameras.

romad 05-16-2011 05:57 AM

private property......windows keep you knunkleheads out and from snooping around.

Zeke 05-16-2011 06:14 AM

Not to any code for a house. Has to be commercial. But why would an individual be building a communications house by himself, Jeff?

sc_rufctr 05-16-2011 06:27 AM

Damn... That has me curious.

No aerials. Now windows. Lots of power. Some ventilation ports in the roof. Maybe a couple of clothes dryers. Room for some vehicles.

Could it be a club house for a sports team?

But that doesn't explain the lack of any window unless they're on the other side we can't see.

My bet is it's a garage or shop and the owner will someday build his retirement/dream house.

Palum6o 05-16-2011 06:41 AM

hmmm, maybe he knows something we don't?

freaky..

DARISC 05-16-2011 06:47 AM

I'd be curious too. I'd ask any neighbors who are aware of of the place what they might know. Did you ever see any sub's trucks - could ask one of them. Or did he do everything himself? Ask some of the contractors in your community? Ask the sheriff's dept.(do they patrol that road?).

Builder young, middle aged, old? Wear a Turkish towel On his head? Or an Italian table cloth? Call Homeland Security! Maybe rent a couple dogs - a cadaver sniffer and a bomb sniffer?

Couldn't you get some info from your county recorder's office?

UconnTim97 05-16-2011 07:48 AM

Or could be a house for zombie vampires. That would explain the abscence of windows.

M.D. Holloway 05-16-2011 09:34 AM

Prolly a server farm...

tabs 05-16-2011 09:56 AM

If I was doing something illegal, I sure wouldn't build a building with ono windows close to a fairly well traveled road.

charlesbahn 05-16-2011 10:06 AM

It's strange, report it to homeland security as unusual and suspicious, and move on. They will look into it.

+1.

Bedrooms by code need egress windows.
Or they may have had to build 'something' on the property to keep approvals/permits from expiring. I've done that.

Gogar 05-16-2011 11:32 AM

Dude, this is PPOT. I suggest you call 911 and Homeland security immediately, and take your M4 over there and strap it on your back and get on the Ducati and get over there post haste. Stand guard until they get there. Oh and get a lawyer just in case.

No, bathrooms need either a window 10% of the floor area with 5% opening or a fan switched on with the light. The items being referred to as dryer vents are larger than the typical dryer vent and in fact could be fan vents. They are at the right height.

I'll retract my statement about commercial. A dream garage does fit the building.

RWebb 05-16-2011 12:03 PM

send in a robo-bat and have it image the interior with ultrasound; post what you find out

M.D. Holloway 05-16-2011 02:09 PM

if its a porn hub, take some pics!!

patssle 05-16-2011 02:16 PM

You can find out exactly who owns the house.

Open records...

dewolf 05-16-2011 02:23 PM

Used to be a thing on TV here in Australia about terror threats and its catch phrase was; 'don't be alarmed, be alert'. Perhaps just report it to the authorities. You just never know.

Hugh R 05-16-2011 02:27 PM

Looks like lightweight garage doors, built it himself, not a commercial facility

The guy who built it was a kind of pudgy middle-aged white dude. I assumed when I saw him that he was an engineer. He just had that look (I spent my first career as an engineer, so I can say that ;)). He had contractors put up the trusses and the roofing, but I think he did the rest himself.

I don't care what's going on there, so I'm not going to do any investigating myself. But I'd feel pretty bad if the place shows up in a news story related to terrorism, or drug production, or mass murder and I hadn't said anything.
I'm thinking of calling the local FBI office and saying, "Umm, you guys know about this place?" and then backing out of it.
