Conversation with a proud mother this morning

At the gas station this morning getting my coffee.

"Yea, them's ma gurls. Dummies, that ones 21 but they don't never carry ID, it's Ok though, all the police here knows who they are, they good girls, ain't one of em got a police record or nuthin."

I get the feeling that's a major accomplishment in their family.

How do the police know who they are, but they have never been in trouble?

Hey, no police record is good. I suspect there are plenty of fine upstanding Pelicans that have police records.

Most definitely NOT hot.

They pulled up in two separate vehicles as I was filling up.

As soon as they got out of the cars I contemplated skipping my coffee.

I sensed they'd be loud, would take forever at the register, buying smokes, lotto, candy bars and other last minute impulse buys.

They did not disappoint.

They even tossed in screaming from inside the store to the one filling up a gas can at a pump 40 feet away expecting her to hear them.

Oh yeah, one of them decided lighting a cigarette 5 ft from the pump was a good idea.

I stopped at the corner gas station for ice yesterday. As I walked up, there was a respectable-looking, middle-aged man scratching off his long strip of lotto tix before getting into his car. I went inside and got in the long line. The man followed and got in line behind me. Man, we waited forever. I paid, got my ice, walked out and he was standing in front of his car again, scratching off the lotto tix he'd just bought. What is with people?

Hey, I gamble too and don't get all upset when I lose like my wife does. I consider the money lost when I leave the house to drive to Vegas. But what fun is it to stand in front of a Circle K and scratch off lotto tickets, go stand in line, cash in the $5 winner, rinse and repeat?

It is the "stupid" tax: A tax on people of lower intelligence. I have no issue with our government running the lottery, daily numbers, scratch off tickets, etc to keep these things out of crime. But, I have a problem with for profit casinos and with advertising, especially by our government, for any of these things.

I have no problem with gambling whatsoever. The few times a year I drop $5 for five numbers for some huge jackpot, I sort of like to fantasize telling my boss to go to hell for a day or two and then snap back into reality when I don't hit a single number. There was an old commercial in NJ that said, "All it takes is a dollar and a dream." I consider that money the price of dreaming for a day or two. I don't plan my life around eventually winning and I can afford the $20-$30 a year I spend on it. And I'm still pretty good at math.

Cindy once won $100 in scratch-offs in a radio contest...something like $20 in winners in the batch. Asked if she wanted more tickets, she said, "No, because then I'd only have $4."

I was waiting for my wife to get off work and pick me up at the Portland airport. So I go to the food court for a Jamba Juice.
At the food court there was a supersized family having their McDonald's meal(s)... meals as in each family member having more than one burger sitting in front of them.

I say to myself "now Scott don't be prejudice... just because they are overweight and shoveling junk food in their faces doesn't make them bad folks"

Then the daughter yells "you so judgmental, just because he is in jail doesn't make him a bad person!"

Amen to that. We have a $25/year powerball budget. Once it gets high enough it's worth the fiver to play "muh hah hah... what'd we do when we win this thing? When can we coil up a steamer on the boss' desk?".

Yeah, $5 is a decent price for half an hour's amusement.

Plus, if we win...

In New Mexico they put the proceeds towards college scholarships - so we can claim that we're doing it for the children. For once, we're _THINKING OF THE CHILDREN!_. Surely that makes it OK?

Between Vegas and the CA lottery if I've put in $100 in the past 30 years I'd be surprised and shamed to admit it.

If the winner's portion of the Lottery exceeds the odds, it is time to throw $5 at the lottery. Other than that, no.
