Under(and over)rated guitarists

While we are talking about drummers, lets hear your picks for guitarists.
I know I'm gonna get nailed for this one...

Overated; Jimmy Page.

Underated; way too many to list!

One thing i've always noticed is, the musicians who tend to be be overrated are usually put in that spot by non musicians. People who play a certain instrument tend to be a little more critical and analytical of others who play the same.

Dave Evans (the Edge)...underated.

Overated? The sober version of Eddie Van Halen.

A couple underrated:

1. Joe Strummer (The Clash) - not massively talented technically, but probably more soul than any other white guy ever.

2. Johnny Marr (ex-Smiths) - massively technically talented, and a brilliant songwriter to boot.

I will get crucified for this but overrated: Eric Clapton. Massively chopped-out but a complete lack of soul in my ears.

Under rated (from a completely talentless non-musician's point of view): Martin Barre.

over rated, jimmy vaughn. crikey! ry cooder for best basically unknown guitar player, after danny gatton. jerry garcia can swing both ways, but he's the only player who brought tears to my eyes, both in playing and in passing.

Most definitely!!! No doubt about it, Stevie Ray had ALL the talent in that family! It's a shame he took it with him when he passed.

I watched a tribute special to Stevie Ray several years ago and had an extremely hard time just watching Jimmy. He looks (and sounds) too 'forced'....no flow whatsoever.

OK, that's an easy one for me: Steve Kimock (who I'm sure most of you have never heard of). This gets quoted all the time (and Steve doesn't care for it), but he was Jerry Garcia's "favorite unknown guitarist" too. I'm not at all comparing the two, but Steve's playing is all about tone, tone, & more tone, yet he can rip withe the best of them when he chooses to. Caveat: you'll either love his playing or hate it

Hendrix in the middle (I don't think over or under, but I love his stuff)

No one mentioned Carlos Santana yet. Perhaps that puts him in the under rated cat. then.

Over rated - Can it get worse than EC? The most boring fart EVER to pick up a Strat. EC is god, my bottom.

Under rated- Steve Morse, consumate guitar player.

Underrated and dead: Rory Gallagher, Roy Buchanan, Jeff Buckley (brilliant musician who happened to play guitar)

I'll probably get thrashed for part of this:

Overrated: Jimi Hendrix.
Don't take that wrong, Jimi was inventive. He was doing things no one had done, making music like no one had, and was not constrained by the norm. That's what I like about him. However, I wouldn't say he was very 'clean'. He sounded pretty sloppy compared to many other very good guitarists...

Underrated: Nuno Bettencourt

I'll put Santana in the "overrated" category. And...even though Eric Johnson is always mentioned in the same sentence with "good tone", I ain't hearin' it. He can flat play, though.

Maybe not "underrated", but if there was one guitarist that I could choose to play like, it would be Billy Gibbons.

Ouuuuu ......Jimi was like Picasso he could bend and stretch a chord..anyway he liked...EC said, "That when Jimi died he wished he'd taken him with him." If you listen to some of the last riffs recorded of Jimi playing Machine Gun you just begin to wonder how long it would be before he could teach the guitar to speaka da English....

When U say "sloppy"...you must mean techanically sloppy. but that might have been the drugs numbing the finger cordination.

I really don't care for much for Jimi till Electric Ladyland...but Band of Gypsys on Daddy its all like the Voodoo Chile becomes the Magic Boy....
