My wife has a '97 Jetta Trek, with the 5 speed. She loves the car, but wants to sell it to get some kind of SUV boat (we've got 2 kids). The car actually performs reasonably well, and although not near as much fun to drive as a P-car, isn't too bad for the jaunts to the grocery store : ) It's been solid as a rock for 5 years - no problems, no headaches. Regular maintenance and new tires and brake pads, that's it.
Any specific questions about the car, or the Jetta in general, let me know...

Have you considered a used Audi A4? They're great cars that don't hold their value very well.

What questions do you have in mind. I was still selling VW's in '98 and still have a lot of useless knowledge floating around in my head.
I have a '95 GTI-VR6 and a '96 Passat TDI. These will be the last VWs I own. The performance is nice, the ride is good, but the build quality rots. Ive have a lot of electrical problems with both cars and the cost of ownership is quite high. Of corse, I only use a VW dealer to do the work too. The reason behind dealer only service; I've had too many problems with general garages working on my past VW. The cars rattle and squeek. They have a tremendous amount of wind noise at highway speeds. The interior plastic is constantly breaking and the door interior door handle in the passat has 'paint' flaking off from my wife's finger nails. The seats are comfortable, the radio stinks. Gas mileage is good to great (TDI). What else can I say... Too much to type here. Email me if you want more info.

Daryl- you just browsing that site? LOL
Jlr- there is nothing wrong w/ the Jetta. I would take one of those over a Cavlier- Grand-Am, etc. anyday- at least it is German!

static,
the list seems right to me. you wouldn't actually want any car on that list would you ![]() i guess i wouldn't classify the wrangler on that list but i would add the passat. there was a thread similiar to this in the past. we all agreed that the vw's and miata's were "for hairdressers" there was a long list honda del sol comes to mind ![]() i guess you either understand it or you don't, i get repulsed when i see a "man" driving a passat or the like... |

carnut: Sorry, but the Jetta is made in Mexico. I'm not sure exactly how German that makes the car. Now the GTI is made in Brazil...at least that country has verifiable (albeit somewhat heinous) connections with the Fatherland...
Planter: I can't agree on the Passat. I think that's a nice car (it is pretty much an A4 after all), and would take one over an Accord or Camry if forced to own a sub-$30K 4-door sedan. |

Planter91C2: If you dont have anything constructive to say then dont say anything at all. I think the Jetta is a neat car, and it is in my budget. You are entitled to your own opinion, but when it attacks someone else and their interests, ie. me, then that is when I dont like it!

My wife and I bought a 2000 VR6 Jetta new. It is a VERY impressive car. It turned, accelerated, and stopped very well.
However, three transmissions in 23k miles was my breaking point. At the point where it needed a fourth, VW said that they will not replace the trans again "because its just going to do it again".I understand that even a new car has some occasional problems, but we had all kinds. We lemon lawed the car and received a 100% refund on all expenses including 1.5 years of payments from VW. People gotta stand up for what they believe in. True the car is made in Mexico, but sub-assemblies are assembled in Germany. Chris |

...oh, and by the way, the Jetta's a great car. Owned one for years. Now I have a Golf (although it's Groover's primary ride).

I have a 2000 Jetta VR6. A big improvement in driving pleasure over my previous Accords and one Camry. It's quiet, handles solidly, and has plenty of smooth power. With 45K miles, not a single problem. I use it often as one would a pickup truck.
I don't think it matters where a car is built. It's all in the engineering. By assembly time, it's too late to make any difference. Cheers ---------------------- Bob Sauerteig '87 Coupe |

I like the idea that someone earlier suggested of a used Audi A4. Or even an E36 BMW 3-series (1992-1998) would be a great, fun car.
Of the cars on the 'gay' list, I would gladly take a Jetta or 3 series any day. But know which car I like the best on that list? The Miata. I don't care about the homosexual stigma that some (misguided) people associate them with; They are a blast to drive and very reliable. |

You all crack me up with your definitions of gay-cars and man-cars, because if you went to Europe, you would discover mini-cars that do not even exist here, such as the Audi A3, the Renault Twingo, Peugeot 106, WW polo, and the list goes on and on. Those are usually women`s cars, and the big machos have VW GTI, VW Jetta, Audi A4, BmW 3 series, etc... So this is just to say that everything is relative in this world, and everything is bigger in the US. And slower too...Boy, I wish I had my 911 when was still living in France. Here, it is a constant frustration to drive, and everytime I open up a little bit on the parkway, my adrenaline goes up not because of the acceleration, but because of the awareness that every second of pleasure can cost me a lot in speeding ticket ! But I am not complaining, I love this country. In France, I would never have been able to afford a 911, and even if I had one, the gas would have cost a lot (around $4/gallon). And this is why they have these mini-cars !
