Desert Car Kings........unbelievealbe

I've just recently watched a few episodes of Discovery Channel's show "Desert Car Kings", and have watched in amazement as they "restore" cars. What a bunch of junk yard Goobers hammering, pounding, beating, body-puttying and slapping cars together. In one episode they literally took a hammer and flattened an inner fender ridge seam so the fender would fit better. Unbelieveable.

I wouldn't touch one of their "restorations" with a ten foot pole.

Nothing new about that other than now it's on television. It's people like that who give the auto restoration industry a bad reputation. Ask me how I know!

I agree. No one can restore (properly) a old rusty car in just a week. They always use some junkyard engine that does not even get a rebuild. They check to see if it has oil in in and fire it up.

This is one show that I watch simply because they irritate me. Their so called "mechanics" can't handle the simplest of tasks, like getting a 35 year old small block started. Or changing a starter, or just about anything really. And the cars look terrible when they are done.

Not to mention, does anyone else find the "son" really creepy? He seems to me to be almost on the edge of some mental disorder.

LOL did you see the one where they "restored" a 68 charger and ran it at the drags against a new charger RT?
Their "restored" muscle car ran really, really slow. Like Turtle slow. 40 horse VW bug slow. 19 seconds at 75 mph.

They installed a junkyard 383, prolly a 2 bbl version out of a truck or station wagon. Either that or they had no clue how to time or jet one.

For comparison, a box stock 1968 charger with a 318 2bbl ran in he high 16s when new.
A new 68 383 charger ran 15.7 in the quarter.

The old man started making excuses something like: "you gotta time the lights just right. Miss the lights and it can cost you a couple seconds".
LOL what bullsheet.
Timing the lights means nothing to elapsed time. It only effects who crosses the line first.
They built a 150 hp General Lee.
Oh the shame.
For all we know they could have done it on purpose to try and make the new chryslers look allot faster in order to sell more cars, I wouldn't put it past the advertising whores.

Even the "Overhaulin'" cars by Foose needed some follow up TLC once the show was in the can. At least that's what one of the owners told me.

You can't build a really nice car in 7 days. The "finder" guy gives his guys 6 weeks or so. The truth in that is that he takes them to auction. Any POS would not sell, so they must be decent.

Public car auctions are crazy though. People get into a bidding frenzy and end up paying way to much often times over dealer price. It's the same type of compulsion you see on casino floors.

Yeah, but at least you get to see the car up close before you go nuts.

Those cars they build on that build-off show are pure, rough, junk that would send even the guy who forgot his coke bottle glasses away.

I watched 2 episodes of DCK's and didn't finish the 2nd one. The old man is a dick and they're supposed to be afraid of his wrath.

What a joke.

I agree. I would be some kind of upset if one of my cars came back with 20 inch wheels, lowered to the ground with a crazy stereo and a wild paint job. Chip Foose is a great designer and from what I understand he is a super nice guy. I just am not a fan of HUGE wheels. I will admit he know a little more about what is in demand and hot than I do, but I don't care. I do know what I like.

I watched an episode over the weekend and they found an engine out back to put in this truck they were 'restoring'. They weren't sure if it ran so - while the engine was dangling from a chain hoist with no transmission - they hooked a battery and dumped gas down the carb and fired her up! The carb caught fire but it ran for a few seconds. That was the extent of the testing of the engine and in it went

Or the "look at me, I'm a pimp" paint colors he usually put on em.
I understand he has to try and make them look a little different than the thousands of other paint jobs he's designed, but some of those color combos he comes up with would make a blind man look away.

But that paint job is what makes the TV producers happy. I saw a recent show of Rides where the owner called the paint shop and said to paint the car just silver, not silver with a black hood and red roof. It still had giant wheels and was so low they had to fill the interior of the car with an huge tunnel to get the exhaust and the drive train to fit. They never really showed the finished interior. I don't know the the passenger could see more than the top of the driver's head.

I've seen some real POS's make it through the auctions.

And that's what's funny. Someone is signed to a contract that the car stays the way Foose turns it out for one year. Steal my car, put some wild ass customization on it and I'd be pissed too.

I watched three episodes this weekend because I was bored and thought Hershey was a washout. I just told my wife that I will never watch that show again because of the "son". There is something definitely wrong there. I think that he spent his school years on the short bus. A $20,000 order is going to put them on the map, internationally? Seriously?
I am going back to Swamp People.
