LOL! Reminds me of when John Gilson & I drove our P-cars out to Aspen for a RMR time trials thing at Woody Creek. 1976. Stayed in snowmass. Going to the pool area, we got strange looks from the well tanned "natives".

Portland.

For those who have no idea what this is about, traditionally it is thought to be a good sign when a Chinese restaurant's customers are all Chinese. Lots of non-Chinese is a bad sign. It means the food isn't authentic, the Chinese found a better place, soon they'll be serving General Tso and chop suey. That's the idea, anyway, and kind of applies to other ethnic restaurants too. Of course, there are excellent Chinese restaurants that are popular with non-Chinese. But this morning, the customers were 2/3 white, in the past its usually been at most 1/2, and the place wasn't as crowded as usual. I only go there maybe 4x year, so maybe it was a fluke, or I was there unusually early - though it looked the same when we left 2 hours later. Maybe its because this place opened another location in Beaverton.

In Portland, non-Chinese pretty much means white, since we are like 80% Caucasian.

i seriously think things have changed. i can walk into the dumpiest chinese dive now and find folks from all walks of life.

they will even give you a fork!! now i just like to check out how adventurous non-asians get, especially if a plate of chicken feet comes around.

i havent had dimsum in awhile. i'm finding it too rich these days. i guess i'm getting old. damn.

Seriously, why do minorities always get a 'pass' for being racist, but 'the man' gets grief for saying "Chinatown' rather than "international district"? ....or for referring to a Mexican as, well, a Mexican, rather than a "Latino"?

...and NOW getting blamed for bad dim sum? Yeah, time.

No kidding...JYL, if this was some sort of social experiment, spare me. I expect more.

I was on the phone last night with my Spanish Great Uncle, Mothers side, who lives in San Fran...his favorite restaurant, Alegrias, was overrun by Jews in town for Memorial Day.
