Nook or Kindle

Seem to recall a discussion here but either I'm mistaken or my Search Fu is weak today.

Daughter graduates 5th grade this week. She is a voracious reader.

Already got her graduation gifts but contemplating adding an e-reader.

I know the Nook alows sharing and my public library has a good catalog available.

Any other differences?

I know Nook is Rootable but not going there.

Thx

I read the same post here and got the Nook. Not the fancy color one, just the basic black and white Nook. To me they were about the same except the Kindle had a keyboard, and the Nook is all done through a touchscreen below the reading screen. In the end the Nook won because I like Barnes and Nobel more than I do Amazon, just a shopping preference.

If it's for reading, the black and white version is better. The screen uses MUCH less electricity torun, so the battery life is MUCH longer. The B&W version is not rootable, I believe.

Nook is getting ready to release a new version in a week or two. The new ver looks like a big improvement over the old and is going for $139.

I don't know about a kindle. My wife is thinking about getting a reader. I've got a buddy that's got a kindle, so I have to talk to him when he gets back from vacation.

Barnes and Noble is in Bankruptcy. The Nook is the ONLY thing that is interesting investors.

OTOH, if you root the Nook, you can put the Kindle application on it. I don't know if you can root the Black and White Nook. The XDA development seems to only be on the Color Nook.

For readability in direct sunlight, you need a Kindle.

I don't need B&N for the nook, it reads normal PDF and Secure PDF files, and I can convert any other format to it using "Caliber" But I'm pretty sure the Kindle does this as well?

calibre - E-book management

I've never tried my Nook in direct sunlight, I'm going to have to do that. I didn't know it had issues with that, and now I'm kind of bummed.

The B&W Nook is not an android device as far as I know, so no rooting.

the B&W nook uses the same e-ink type of screen as the B&W kindle, so it's also good in sunlight. It's the color devices that suck in the sun, I believe.

B&N isn't in bankruptcy - it is Borders....

i just got a nook and love it. I would probably love a kindle too, but I was given the nook.

I was not able to actually compare the 2. I do find with the nook it is slow to power up from off. However, i generally just put it into "sleep" mode. Also, navigating the web pages is a bit of a pain. That said, you can always search and buy online, and when you turn on the nook, your books are there.

I can read the hell out of books now. I've had it 2 weeks and am on my 5th book.

I have always been a reader. My only hesitation would be getting it for a just finished 5th grader. One of the best parts of reading at that age was looking through libraries and bookstores and finding great books based on the covers and luck. At her age, she should experience that before going all electronic and stuff.

I just read an interesting book - The Man Who Loved Books Too Much... and it talked about that - how the physical form of the book becomes part of our personal history - the feel of the pages, how it opens to a well loved passage, how the stains on the cover remind you of the summer at the beach when you read it, even the smell when you open it, takes us to a point in our personal history. That we become connected through our own timeline with the books on our shelves.

My wife and I are both avid readers. We have lots of books. The 2 weekends ago, we went through all of our books and picked out a bunch that we didn't need. We sold 15 boxes of books to Half Price Books because our bookshelves were all full. One thing that I noticed when going through them, especially some of the books that we'd had boxed up for a while was that the smell was somehow comforting. I wouldn't say that they smell nice, but the small was familiar and comfortable. I have 2 copies of one book. One is a paperback in good shape. The other is a ratty old paperback with tape holding the cover in place. I kept both. I'd like to read the story again, but I don't want the one to fall apart any more than it already is. I also just couldn't make myself get rid of the old ratty copy.

You can also read a book by candle light during a hurricane. The Kindle will eventully lose power. Also, with a Kindle, I think you're really only renting the books. Eventually, you lose the right to read them. And of course, some are not available in electronic editions. So, we agree on this...I prefer paper books.

Oh, and you can't read a Kindle during takeoff and landing.

I think you're on the right track. Go with a color Nook. Don't root it immediately, but it is rootable. I expect if your daughter is anything like her father, it will be rooted sooner than you think...

For straight up reading the Kindle wins. But, I don't like Amazons policy of removing books after you've paid for 'em ...

I got a Color Nook for myself and skipped rooting and when to wholesale OS replacement (Android CM7) and it rocks - Firefox 4, Flash, games galore, all sorts of fun stuff. And I can still use the various online book sources.

You might check out:

6" EZ Reader and 5" EZ Reader Pocket PRO eBook reader, digital eBook reading device

Nice display, but not tied to any specific format/e-book vendor. You transfer the books you want via SD card. Not nearly as convenient, but a lot better for "control" of e-books.

LOL, I suspect you are correct.

Kicking myself for not grabbing the Samsung deal I postedon your tab thread last week.

The ante got upped tonight.

She brought home her final TAKS scores, 40 correct out of 40 on the science portion, perfect score.

For the year she scored 122 out of 126.

It's a pretty big deal not only for herself but for the school itself.

Galaxy Tab. It is only a few bucks more expensive than the Nook.
