Tell me about Salzburg, Austria

I am going to be in Salzburg for six weeks in July and part of August for a study abroad program. Does anyone have any particular insights on particular things to do? Or any Porsche specific content in the area? I will have three day weekend free to travel.

I am actually good friends with a few members of the real Von Trapp family. When the they emigrated to the USA, they ended up in my hometown of Stowe, VT. I am hoping to find some interesting, obscure auto related places to vist. I know that the Porsche dealer in Salzburg ran a 917 at Le Mans...

Cool town! All the tourist areas are obsessed with Mozart because he was born there. You can go in his birth house if you're so inclined. I wouldn't stay more then two days there but I get bored easily. There is a terrific little hotel/restaurant called The Golden Enete. Hotel Salzburg, Austria - Hotel accommodation in Salzburg, Austria The restaurant specializes in duck but they have other fine dishes as well.

Hope this helps!

1+ On the EFA museum. Really eclectic collection, great bunch of micro cars and lesser known prewar marks, many I had not heard of before. Nice group of Porsches also. Great contrast to the big one mark museums.
Great driving area around Salzburg. The salt mines are fun and interesting.
Check out the castle in Salzburg.
Have fun !!

- The castle on the hill
- Stiegl brewery tour
- Loads of Mozart stuff
- the churches in the old part of the city are pretty cool
- I think it's maybe an hour and a half to Vienna by train and that's a fun place to go too. Not far to Munich either.

i spent the entire summer there in 1972 in a leherhaus. the salt mines are wayyy cool. the town is wayyyy cool, the mtns are wayyyy cool. i learned how to drink WARM LITER MUGS OF BIER w/radishes and pickles. and OOOOM-PAHH-PAHH my azz off BIG TIME!

but understand europa is a puny lil place in comparison to the wide open u.s. example: if you drove from phx to tucson or phx to flagstaff................there you have gone THRU 3-4 countries. so with that in mind get yerself a EURAIL PASS and blast around and see the sights.

my fave was munich/stuttgart/switzerland. ya spend 3 months there, ya kind of get the feel for the place real fast. 2 weeks aint gonna do the place justice.

whatever you do..............DO NOT ORDER A HAMBURGER unless you like sausage. cuz EVERYTHING IS SAUSAGE! you will pay dearly for a real 100% BEEF HAMBURGER! ask me how i know.

if in jolly ol england................AVOID WHIMPIES at ALL COST unless you like sausage burgers w/a SIDE OF HEAVY GREASE TO LUBE THE PIPES!

I've been there twice, and get sick of the Sound of Music stuff really quickly (can't stand the movie). The Mozart stuff gets tiring quickly, as well. And the merchandising of both is ridiculous.

That said, it's still a beautiful town with lots of other things. As someone mentioned above, the salt mines are really cool. I was only 15 on that trip, but I do remember it being fun. The entrance is a big long slide down on a burlap sack.

On my second trip there I saw a concert at the palace in the room Mozart played his earliest concerts in. Kind of cool for the historical factor, though marble walls and floors don't make for great acoustics.

Other than that, it's a great walking town. Beautiful streets to stroll around, etc.

Beautiful town, even with all the tourist clutter. Gotta go up to visit the castle, for sure. Lots of walking space up there on top of the mountain.

Munich is just a short train ride away, and that's a trip worth taking. The famed Marianplatz, the main square, is just a short walk from the city's central train station. That's where you encounter the Rathouse, with its famed "Glockenspeil," which performs at, I seem to recall, 11 am and 1 pm. The Frauenkirch, the famous church with the twin domed spires, also is right in that area. Lots to see and do there in that central area, not least the wonderful Deutsche National Museum, a science/tech museum that contains some amazing stuff.

Another trip worth taking is to drive to Oberndorf, not too far away from Salzberg, to visit the little chapel that was built as a memorial to the writing of "Silent Night," the beloved Christmas carol.

Also worth a trip is Berchtesgaden, a bit to the south. Gorgeous area with lots of WWII-related history. Do a search for "Gasthof zum Turken." It's a little hotel that the Nazis took over during the war. I do believe the management offers tours of the tunnels that honeycomb the hillside there - it was where all the party bigwigs built their summer homes, and all those locations were interconnected by the tunnels.

Go see the original Porsche Museum at Gmuend. It's about a hour from Salzburg and a gorgeous drive.

And if you see a sign for this beer, drop everything and order a few.

One of the classes I am taking is: "International Food Polotics" as part of the class we are going to tour a few local breweries. I am definitely looking forward to see where that goodness comes from. Austria seems to have more breweries per capita than any other country.

Go see the Eagles nest.

When you are in the castle, look across the river and you will see a hill. There is a religious monastary at the top and a church. If you climb the hill from the bottom, the Stations of the Cross will pass as you climb and end at the crucifixion with 3 crosses.
There is a path around the top of the hill and you get to see some of the walls and lookouts. Very long hike in all.

Below the castle is a restaurant built in the hill--one of the oldest in Austria. Near buy is another cave like structure you can enter for a Euro or so and see how the early locals worshiped.

I did the self guided, 3 city tour a couple of years ago. Munich, Salzburg & Innsbruck. Not enough time in 2 weeks but I had been to each city before. You never can do it all.
