OJU's MOST EXCELLENT BIG ADVENTURE

cam o-ring drivers side was the leaker. along with #4 valve guide being a lil poo head.

no gotchas, no "OH POO'S", normal wear, normal everything.

replacing anything that blinks at us, no stone left unturned. no foo foo crap, same as OEM, no goofy azz painted valve covers, SHOWROOM STOCK built WITH LOVE!

OEM clutch in perfect condition at 124K miles. replacing w/center force.

what a fantastic day that started w/my sphincter slammed shut at pucker power #10 wondering what the hell we would find wrong bad foobared.

heads already at shop.

Good news for a change. I'm sick of hearing nightmare stories about cars.

Hey, Nice garage and that plane looks interesting. (I won't ask you to post more photos)
What's up on the mezzanine floor?

the entire reason we did this was because of a very unscrupulous sawed off independent dealer stated upon purchase "the valve guides have been done" when asked about them 6 years ago.

i have had to endure very comical people on numerous occasions remind me that my car is smoking. wasnt eating enough oil to worry about, but nonetheless embarrassing. i put up with this crap long enough. and the weep from the cam o-ring. we could tell from sludge marks the car had been sitting awhile thru its life, despite upon my purchase running the snot out of it. sludge once there dont get flushed away. P.O. had died so we surmise it just sat until estate cleared.

no weirdness on plugs, intakes, exhaust valves. at 124K and i bought it with 110k, i am preeeeetyy damn happy with what we found.

oh and the upstairs is just for storage . we are busting azz on this before we get nailed by EXTREME HEAT which is on its way after this low pressure works its way thru. these damn hangers turn into microwaves come summertime. and we have until about the end of the week of nice weather. heads should be done in 3 days. gotta work up the "pelican parts "everything" list, and call them today and get my free shipping, right to my mancave.

if it even is suspect it will be replaced. my son and his friend came over yesterday to help us lift engine onto stand, and asked "what are you doing?" and i replied" werking on yer future!"

this SOB motor and tranny WILL NOT BE COMING OUT IN MY LIFETIME AGAIN i assure you!

sometimes ya gots to bite the big donkey weenie and pay the bucks to get a NICE WARM FUZZY!

I suspect that adventure will be in my future. I hope to get a few more miles befe I do it. I will be at 142,000 by the end of summer. Maybe I can make it to 150K before I do it.

Are you doing the full rebuild, split the case and everything or just a top end?

hey there are (2) schools of thought here. and we drank about 16 bill-yon cold ones sunday talking about this, with my amigo who has built more chev v-8's than i evar cared to. engine builders in the know do NOT start with a fresh block. they start with a SEASONED BLOCK! ie. it has been USED! why? cuz all da molecules are in der rightful places and its "seasoned". HUH? WTF? yeah thats what he said. then he said "why in hells name disrupt everything the factory did RIGHT when all yer gonna do is run it 1-maybeeee 3 times a year at a track and ya aint even racing!

then i asked my other amigo "if this was yours would you crack the cases after what you have seen so far?(he has 10+ years building porsches) and he said "NO!" and then i stated "if ya had more money than buddah would you crack the cases" and he replied....................."NO!"

now my other amigo with the exact same year 1987 coupe showroom stock "uncle jeff" did do new rod bearings and new ARB rod bolts. 3-4 hours more time. he had damn near the SAME MILEAGE AS ME!

so yeah i am kind of in a quandry at this very moment but i am leaning towards NOT cracking the cases right now.

i admit i have read a ton of articles here that peoples wrote how not a damn thing was wrong with their bottom end and they felt it never needed to be touched and they went on to enjoy a happy life and run the snot out of them after a top end freshen up, nip and tuck.

the morning after is always fun looking at everythang we tore apart for anything suspect. we will see by this afternoon anything else wrong that may sway our train of thought.

so far so good. and i am having a blast doing it!

Odd Job,

I have to commend you on the thorough job that you are doing, but mostly because I can read and understand your posts!

Does this mean a new and legible OJU is in our future?

well maybe? its a cyclic thang, mood swings, lunar phases, beer intake, enough sex, good food, good sleep.

put it this way...................we are about 4 hrs away from dropping a damn nice order on wayne today. it will be a "happy pelican" day for wayne.

i went into this as mentioned with a slammed shut SPHINCTER at level #10 on the pucker value equation. i am really having a riot with this. its fun, educational, and ya get to see 1st hand what the hell is right and wrong, unlike some shop that generally does NOT want you in there bugging them with STOOPID QUESTIONS of which i have MILL-YONS!

its a religious experience.

pulling the track tires off(BFG R-1's) and slapping the street tires back on, and get a 1000 miles on it, adjust the valves, torque the heads to spec. dump the oil and filter blah blah. then wait til it cools off here and get a gaggle of amigos together and go assault wilcox,az and go buzz around INDE MOTORSPORTS with the freeking AIR CONDITIONING ON LAUGHING/SQUEALING LIKE LIL GIRLS!

there IS NOTHING MORE FUN than going into a wilcox,az. bar with a porsha t-shirt and hat w/KAWBOY BOOTS ON and rubbing elbows with da LOKALS! some damn good messikan food there(as advertised in sunset magazine-"along the salsa trail"!)

If you don't mind would you post an approximate price on that order?

Of course an exact list and price would be better.

sure no problem. i can tell you from the valve grinder dudes quote, "if everythang is JUNK on all the heads" about $1000. thats EVERYTHING! so all we are doing is new exhaust valves, valve guides, springs if needed, machine work. mucho cheaper.

centerforce clutch kit(everythang) about a $1000 +/-

g-50 upgrade(while yer in der). new swepco fluid new side seals(why not? cheap and i aint doing again)

yer general "every seal gasket o-ring".

this is no different than a standard aircraft engine.

my highest suggestion when ya do this..............do it with someone that has done them before. anybody! from pca/scca it doesnt matter. i can see 1st hand what a GIANT PITA it would be for the 1st time engine rebuilder. with somebody that knows...................its a TOTAL GAS!

easier than any v-8 i have ever been involved with. big blocks just suck cuz everythang is BIG!

Would a set of arp rod bolts and new rod bearings not make your warm fuzzy a little bit warmer, and fuzzier? I believe that 3.2 had smaller rod bolts that are failure prone at higher rpm. If it were mine, and I was going to track it, I might be thinking about this a little harder. Just my .02. Glad to see you did not have any big snafu's. I am hoping I am as lucky , will find out this weekend.

we have been to calif mtr speedway (2) times now, PIR several times, and firebird intl a coupla times and INDE, over the course of ownership. we aint racing except in our minds.

1) it aint a race car

2) it IS showroom stock

3) we aint going for a pca/scca national title

4) racing rule i learned a hell of a long time ago. "he who pays for racey car will NEVER haul azz in it ,becuase he who pays for it KNOWS how much it costs, and therefore will NEVER haul azz." the ONLY way anyone will EVER WIN..............is not give a damn about how much it costs!

5) the condition this is in does not warrant the bottom end for what we are doing. if this damn thing cant make san dago/durango/alburturkey than we are idiots, and i'll be the 1st to admit our mistakes.

6) my idea of FUN is not mixing it up with 42 other crazed psychotic foaming at the mouth lunatics with a bank tied to their azz, for a lousy checkered flag. our idea of fun is hitting the twisties at inde for 2-3 days of buzzing around the course at the back of the pack and having the entire course to ourselves and let the hot shoes pass us on the runway straight, all the while having the A/C BLOWING (LOL) and then drinking beer, eating a boatload of tacos and coming home in ONE PIECE!

7) my buddy jeff did go whole hawg stripping his 1987 coupe down to bare bones, and it is a racey car. crap ya take the harnesses out the fire system out and the roll bar and mine would look like any other cab.

8) its ALL ABOUT HAVING FUN!
