some good news for my family..well my wife and I.

i am pretty proud of my wife. she got laid off at her commercial real estate job about 2 years ago. she made great $$, but didnt really like the work. she called it "soul-less". she was a loan closer and assistant to a loan broker.

she cried a bit, and rallied. she had always wanted to take her college degree and elevate it to the next level with Nursing. i told her i would support her to the end. she had to fill in some prereq courses to qualify for any nursing program. then she aced the TEAS test. every class she had to take was full. she had to talk to every professor to plead for a seat. she got all "A's" after securing a space in class.

now to the difficult part. the Bay Area is completely impacted when it comes to nursing. one school had 40 seats each session with thousands applying. she got in!!! we just got word, she got into her second choice too!! (i think about 40 student too) her first choice is a better program, but more expensive..but it is literally 2 miles away. we are opting for choice #1.

i am stoked for her. she just needs to make it thru, and land a job. wow.

Awesome! My brother has one semester left at Samuel Merritt for his MSN. He chose the Nurse Practitioner route.

With the nursing shortage, she's sure to have a bright future. I wouldn't be surprised if hospitals started recruiting her. Could be the source of some educational funding.

Awesome. At the risk of opening a political discussion, I will say that the medical services industry is WAY out of balance from a labor perspective, and I hope equilibrium is achieved soon. Aside from medical services and education, where else can you find jobs that require the equivalent of a master's degree for entry, that pay $40K per year? Hopefully, the medical insurance companys' stranglehold on that industry is about to be dismantled. Congratulations to you, your wonderful wife and the rest of your family!

A word about nursing in california. My daughter is a BSN, recently licensed. She has been having great difficulty getting a job, because nobody has been hiring around here recently, and they are not interested unless you have a year of experience in an acute care facility. There are new grad programs that I turned her on to, so far to no avail.

Your wife will need to get an RN or BSN, otherwise she might be frustrated by the limitations of her license in this state. I would encourage her to get as many certifications as she can after graduating. ACLS is pretty much mandatory, but if she is certified to give chemo or is hip to reading EKGs, that can make her stand out from the crowd a bit.

Congrats!! I'll temper that by stating that there is PLENTY of bull***** in nursing education that must simply be endured. It gets a little better on the other side and (IMO) is best/least in an ICU...if her personality fits for that grind.

Also, the nursing shortage is regional at best and is currently verging on non-existent. That will change if the economy ever turns around and people can retire...which leads to the real issue of folks living longer with (some without) problems and needing more care.

Congrats to your wife.

Nice, congrats to you both. This is a noble calling. I spent weeks if not months in the hospital with first my ex mother in law and then my father who was bed bound for 8 months post surgery before he passed. I met dozens of nurses all of whom were caring, compassionate and great people. The difference it makes for families is incredible.

Good for your wife, Vash...

Our daughter is an R.N. Currently doing the travel nursing thing because the $$$ are better.

Truth...get "R.N." after your name, you can land a job nearly anywhere with little difficulty.
