Back from San Fran Vacation...question for west coast Porsche owners

For all you folks that provided me and my family travel tips and things to do in San Francisco, thanks! We had a great time and really enjoyed the weather, all the sights, and the cuisine.

I must comment, you west coast guys are fortunate. Here in Louisiana, you see the occasional 911, Boxster or Cayman, but in San Fran, gees.....Porches everywhere! Sooo many nice cars, both new and classic older models.

Question: what's the deal with many of the owners removing the badging on the rear of the car? My wife even commented that most of the cars were missing the model designation. Is that just a local thing?

Just curious.

Mark, I think I've read somewhere that something like half of all Porsches sold end up in the US, and half of all the Porsches sold in the US end up in Cali.

Houston's got it's fair share of Porsches and convertibles too.

I've seen and heard of lots of folks debadging cars (not just porsches) for a cleaner look.

Very common... been going on for several years now... some car guys going for the clean look by de-badging their cars. Very easy way to customize your car. Probably a backlash from all the years of hanging all kinds of junk on you car to personalize it (ala J.C. Whitney)

And yes you see it done to everything from Hyundai to Honda to Mercedes and BMW

no, but I've seen some shows on Mardi Gras. I think badgers might be the least of your worries in the back seat

Then again, did you visit the Tenderloin in SF when you were here?

For me the cheap plastic Boxster emblem, which breaks the first time you detail your car, was the worst looking thing on the car so I flossed it off. After it was gone I liked the clean look and left it that way.

Good to hear you had a good time while visiting our fine state. I hope you fill us in on some of the things you decided to partake in.
As far as the debadge(r)ing of cars here; Most of the customer cars we work on at our shop still are badge(r)d. Most of the debadged cars are the late models with the cheap crap plastic badges. They are so bad that we actually stock them at our shop.

The way it seems to work in SoCal is this:

Badges removed to clean up lines.

Badges removed so your friends and others can't tell which model and you can do a little fibbing.

Badges are removed and replaced with others. There is a certain group around these parts that do this with Mercedes a lot. They think they are fooling people and they feel the "status" will make them more important than they really are. Example: Person will buy an E class Mercedes and ask the dealer to remove the badge and replace with an S badge.

debage. I am not sure if it's a fashion out there, but I almost always do that since... can't remember, if it's easy to remove. I like the clean/smooth look. And also easier when you wash/police/wax your car.
