dont you think this roof will leak?

my next door neighbor's abomination. they put up a horrible addition to the house. they attempted to skirt the permitting and got caught. it has been rejected work after rejected work. not really the contractor's fault. he is friends with the owner, and the owner forced the issue to save $$.

i have never seen city inspectors make surprise visits. i had to permit my work.

anyways, here is the roof. they put new shingles up and simply tucked it under the old stuff. how can this possibly work? no extension of the paper or anything.

they just threw up a window, without installing addtional 2x4 studs under the new header. (cripple stud?)

my inspector today, gave me the green light, and sagged his shoulders and said, "and now i have to go next door".

pics.

It will leak at the "joint". (if you could call it that)

What they need to do is take the new roof off and reinstall it.
Not so cheap when you factor that in.

Is that the gutter hanging off???

Some people are so cheap it ends up costing them more than if they had do it right in the first place. Stupid...

Uhhh...yeah..it will leak. What a moron. Contractor/carpenter knows better! It can be fixed without removing the whole roof by a mildly experienced roofer.... but it appears that the two roofs are a differnt height.

the house is a wreck. and getting worse.

i tried to tell them that that would leak. deaf ears.

every addition i have seen and help with, they budgeted for a new roof.

more and more, i think i am going to move. i like the old people in my culdesac, but my neighbor is crazy. i hope the city inspector caught any sub-par electrical.

The hillbillies across the street had a roof that looked just like that one before they lost their house and were evicted. The city tore the sh_tshack down shortly afterwards...

If that joint/seam is where the addition is, then the framer did a piss poor job. Should have meshed in the roof decking instead of a hard joint.

My neighbour from the last house I lived in had a tarpaulin covering most of his roof for almost 10 years.

A storm had ripped off a big section of tiles and the emergency services people installed the tarpaulin as a temporary fix.

The thing is, there is no code regarding a lot of tie-in procedures. An inspector will most likely have to pass that as bad as it is.
The window with no header will be a different matter.

Why isn't it the contractor's fault? You can choose to do good work, you can choose to do *****, or you can choose to say "no." He chose to take the $$ and do *****.

they have to do what they have do. There are many bottom feeders in this rotten business that give up good people a bad rap. I just had a plumbing co knock my plumbing because she wanted to get an other opinion. Now, she wants us out. Some people just don't know what good work/design is even if it hit them in their faces

I just had a good laugh at the craftsmanship, then laughed harder knowing who reported. I want to see your abomination.

There are still tarps nailed to lots of roofs around here from the 2008 Hurricane.

seems to me if that pos joint were papered and a full length of shingle overlapped the joint it'd be fine.
