about that time of year again; what are all the hunters planning?
please dont let this turn into a hunter vs anti hunter thread.
but.. what is everyone planning? most big game draws are complete, and i pulled the typical ZERO tags. i dont think i can win a coin toss at this point. here are my plans; all bow-hunting. (i.e. vegetarian) california. i got a Archery only tag for deer. this is my wild card, as in access to a decent area is very difficult. i plan to hike to my 11000 feet elevation secret spot again. i have yet to get something. then i have a pocket full of pig tags. again, california access sucks. lake sonoma to fight the crowds again. added one point each for cali elk and deer. saving them for a rainy day. OTC idaho archery elk. my brother and i are going for a hail mary and will check out idaho. probably go to the south eastern corner for public land. still need to do research. maybe south west corner near nampa? then we got free access to some ranch near austin texas. land is unhunted, so it will be difficult because we will need to put up the treestands. but it is free. deer and hogs. what are you hunters doing..lowride993? |
My son pretty much hunts the farm:
- Duck and geese in the fall/winter - Deer (no archery, but black powder and shotgun) in the fall/winter - Dove in the fall/spring - Turkey in the fall I stay after the Ground Hogs all summer...I am vewwy, vewwy quiet. |
Thats a bummer Vash. This thread is perfect timing, I just got my Colorado big game tags in the mail yesterday.
I got the following big game tags: -Anterless Elk for the third season rifle (starts November 3rd) public land but same unit we have hunted for years so we know the area and have lots of success, it is near Chimmney Rock in CO, our campsite is at about 10,500 feet. This is to fill the freezer with yummy meat and summer sausage. -Antlered Deer (Mule) for the third season rifle, same unit and one other as elk. I will do an over the counter archery for Elk, which is pretty much statewide and do a number of weekends. I have a lot of friends that go, so I am going to try a few places with them. We start scouting here before too long. Then I will do white tail in Nebraska, we have some private and public land we hunt in late December early January. Then going on next year, more archery turkey. This was my first year and I came damn lose to getting a nice sized tom that I had stalked for about an hour and 45 minutes. Shot right under him.... There has been some discussion of going hog hunting in Texas with some friends that went last year, but we will have to see what my vacation time and plans look like. I'd also need to discuss it with my wife, I already have a pretty full plate huting wise. Bill |
Still stopping to talk with the guy that has the lease on the 600+ acres across the road from me... hoping he'll let me hunt the tail end of the season for a day or two.
|
Didn't draw anything decent in CA either. Here is my rough plan. I always hunt. If I am not, I go spear fishing. ;)
George A pig or two before the end of summer Hit the rabbits hard starting July 4th weekend (chicken substitute) Any rattlesnake bycatch lands in the pot Two Doe/Fawn Antelope in WY D11 rifle in CA A31 archery in CA Bear in CA Waterfowl season apps for Kern / St. Jacintos Quail/Dove/Chuckar and Waterfowl with new dog throughout the season in CA. Yes - I will be busy. We have not bought meat in years with a family of 4-6, so I better keep it up! George |
got skunked on elk again(arrgghh) here in az. praying for at least a goofy deer tag. scamming on new mexico land owners permits for elk. got a real good connection in catron county, new messiko.
if all else fails..............colorado for a over the counter deer tag. also we will get a local mtn puddy tat tag, and hope for the best(saw a nice bobkat yesterday morning) and proceed to lower the pesky varmint numbers one bullet at a time for shizzles and grins. practice man ...............its all abouts the PRACTICE! |
For the first time in 27 years I won't be heading back to Ontario to go hunting at our hunt camp. The numbers of participating hunters have dwindled down to three, and it's just not worth the hassle or the extreme expense this year. (Between the flight, and non-resident licenses, it's a $2k trip compared to $250 if I was local, like my Dad).
Instead of doing the traditional thing, my Dad and I have decided to do one or two big "destination" hunting/fishing trips per year. This year he's flying out with my Mom to spend a couple of weeks at my place and we're going Sturgeon fishing near Hell's Gate for a couple of days. Just went on a jet boat guided sturgeon trip a few weeks ago, and it was amazing. The Fraser River, in that part of BC, is surreal, and it should be a blast. Needless to say that means for the first time ever I'll be hunting here, at home, in BC. Lived here since the late 80's, but never hunted here. Just got my BC outdoor card and was surprised at how easy it was, as they accepted my Ontario hunter safety course as equivalent. I was thinking about bear hunting, but that's just too easy where I live, as they just wander through every couple of days. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308765755.jpg I'm hoping to talk to a friend of mine's father who deer hunts to start getting some local information and knowledge, and head out for a day or three trip for deer. Tags around here aren't hard to get, except for mountain goat. |
I have been fostering a whole bunch of dogs this year. I am getting a puppy the beginning of Sept.
So at 10 weeks old we will be at Hastings Island for his first taste of chuker! My wife wants to train this pup so she will take lead on training this one. With my other dog we will going up to Eagle lake area for quail. And I hope some Pheasant if I can squeeze it in. |
I haven't hunted for years. Just wasn't fun after my hunting buddy died. I miss the guy. :(
He knew the upper Santiam Canyon like the back of his hand. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308767630.jpg |
I drew a muzzle loader deer tag for the unit I acutually look at out my back window. It is a rut hunt, any deer. My daughter and I get to hunt the whole month of November basically. Should be fun and productive.

Open season July 1st:
Crab... Dungeness... Lots. |
I will offer any locals (MD/VA/DE/PA) the opportunity to Duck and Geese hunt. I can only guarantee you'll be cold: D&G's always optional.
Vash, if you were closer:) |
Call if in Indiana, I've got a little bit of a farm and noone is really hunting it, I'm across from a state park.
|
I havent even thought about it yet
|
Vash,
There is LITERALLY infinity dove behind my place. Sept. 1 is a Thursday. In or out? |
By the way, hunting in California SUCKS, except for waterfowl.
|
I disagree that hunting in CA sucks. Success rates do on some of the large game, but there is plenty of public land grounds within a couple hours from my house. Beautiful country too. I live in the largest metro area in the nation, not counting NY. I am also fond of the pig hunting in our state even though most of that is pay to play.

Please, please PLEASE come to Ohio. You can camp on my front lawn. Hell, you can camp in my living room and shoot white tails from my window. I am so sick of deer everywhere, eating my garden, running out in front of my car... just come kill the baxtards.

I just got my Mule deer tag for Co. This is a hunt that three of us have made since 1992. It now takes three points to get a deer tag for us out of staters. During the years we can't get deer tags we hunt elk.
Back home we hunt duck, deer and quail. Looking forward to the hunt this year. Could be our last. Bill |

Vash, I will send you an e-mail but you are now committed. |
Northeastern California, around Adin, used to be great deer country. Back in the day, (1950's) I spent a summer bucking hay for a cattle ranch near there. Owner was a buddy of my dad's. He'd get permits for the deer ruining his alfalfa crop....thinking about it, you'd need to know somebody to hunt there.
|
Yeah, the X zones are still pretty good.

I'll be hunting deer about 10 miles outside Crystal Falls, MI.
Joining us (god willing) will be my step mothers father. 86 years old. He still skis and competes in Nastar. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He got hit by a shell, after only being in Europe for a few weeks. I love hearing his stories. He shot a doe last year. He said, "I got a bit of buck fever, and my heart was going pretty good. I didn't die, thats a good sign." I wish more young men today could see how they fit into the world of men by sharing in the ritual of hunting. You hear the voice an 86 year old who led a productive, positive life and contributed to his community. You get a better sense of what you will need to do in life to succeed. Many kids don't seem to have the slightest clue as to their position in the world. Their arrogance is astonishing. All bling, no substance. |
We keep having a small (for this area, large for back home) 12 point coming from the state forest, across the soybean patch, and spending time with our horses. Hope he stays around for Wifey to take out this winter.... But I really don't want dead animals on the walls.

I will be hunting moose in the Brooks range in AK then sping grizzly on the AK peninsula. Will also get some hogs in Texas and of course Nevada chukars |
If in extreme SE OK and wanting to take out hogs let me know well in advance. I'll talk to in-laws. They have SEVERAL to get rid of and he could use the help sometimes!
He has taken several down each year and it is getting harder for him to do. |

Woooo Hoooooo!!!!!
I have two Archery Elk trips planned in the next few weeks near the Continental Divide here in CO. A quick one this weekend mostly to check things out, and then a four day-er in a few weeks! Bill |
lucky. good luck!!!
doing dove opener tomorrow with a well known pelican. my first time meeting him and his family. i mean, SICKDAY tomorrow.. |
In my part of Georgia they just approved shooting over corn, legal. Not sure just how much sport or skill it takes to use a high power rifle, scope, and shooting over a big corn feeder. Don't get me wrong. The deer work over my blueberry field pretty good. I figure after first couple of days of hunt season the deer will go nocturnal. We usually shoot at least 12-15 deer off my place each year.
To answer your question, we will plant some rye, wheat, etc, and make sure the feeder is full of corn. |
