Need audio recommendation for garage stereo-speakers, etc...

I'd like to put a deafening stereo in my garage--it's the only place my wife will allow me to crank the music and need some recommendations for USED, CHEAP, and LOUD stereo components. Don't need reference quality sound just loud like a live concert. I can't help it I love loud music sometimes it clears the mind.

not cheap, but the biggest Klipschorns you can find will do great, esp. if you aim them right at the wife's kitchen

I bought a new receiver (Integra) and speakers (B&W) for my home theater set up. I moved the old receiver (Onkyo) and speakers (Infinity) to the garage. Keep an eye on Craiglist for someone that is upgrading. Or Audiogon AudiogoN high-end Audio for sale, high end HiFi classifieds, audiophile auctions, audio forums. I really like the B&Ws but they might be a bit expensive for a garage set up.

I have a nice Bedini class A 100/100 I'd sell. Couple it with Klipschorns and you've got a thumpin' system. (legend has it that Klipsch couldn't hear anything above 3KHz.)

Go with a PA type system, big bullet proof woofers and a horn tweeter, sound reinforcement gear:

These speakers, "quality you get what you pay for", and well who knows how "good" they'd sound, but they're big loud and cheap.

onlyfactorydirect | eBay

they even have powered units with built in amp, so heck you could power them off any signal source.

Try to find some old Polk LS-90's.

Pair with a decent preamp and an Adcom 555 amp. Can have it all for less than a grand.

It'll piss off the neighbors.

I just use the old stereo stuff I had in college- Speakerlab speakers that barely fit under the 36" high workbench.

A quick trip to a local pawn shop may be in order.

I just put a stereo in my hangar. Used some components I had left over from my days as a single man, and some components I picked up at a pawn shop.

Many man pleasing decibels.

Used older "Interaudio by Bose" loud speakers (the ones with the 10" drivers), laid down on top of standard wall cabinets: sound incredible. Have high-end Polk in-wall speakers: great for TV but need all 4 on for a good music Punch.

nostatic recommended some QSC speakers when I was looking for PA type stuff. I found a pair of K10's used and picked them up. They can take an output directly from an iPod or other MP3 player and have a built-in 1000W amp each. They sound pretty good for music but are not especially cheap if you have to buy them new. Figure $700 each new or maybe $500-550 each used if you can find them. I prefer to wait until I can find a used set of any of these suggestions. I bought mine from a wedding videographer that also did karaoke. He had used the system only a couple of times over the last year and figured he could use the money for some new equipment.

Not as nice but some people like these also. Probably plenty loud in a garage. yCapable of 118dB at 1 meter. $350 each.

The other route is to get a good set of efficient speakers and as much amplifier power as you can get. Buy old stuff that does not do surround sound for the best bang for the buck. Klipsch is my choice for the money. Cerwin Vegas (get a set with 12 inch or 15 inch woofers) are cheaper but sound rather harsh to me. I only have a cheap older Yamaha Receiver right now but am considering trying a used Crown PA type amp for a few hundred. I think it would really make the old Klipsch speakers kick.

Speakers may be too large but here's an amp for you.

Be patient as there is always a good deal on a nice piece that will come up sometime. Just save the money so you have cash on hand ready to snap up a good deal when it comes along. A daily 5 minute search of searchtempest.com will eventually yield what you would like. Good luck.

Just my 0.02.

With the concrete floor and metal everywhere, the acoustics in a garage are going to suck so cheap speakers will do fine. Garage sale or pawn shop stuff with a big woofer will do better. Just make sure they will handle the wattage of your amp. Add a small sub if you really want to crank. You may want to mount them from the ceiling or on the wall to have more floor space.
