Open Engine Lid

This is something that I have been doing since I got my first Porsche, (1972). When ever I get home, pull the Porsche in the garage, I lift the engine lid. I figure that letting the heat out will keep everything "happy". I leave the garage door open and sometimes put a fan on the engine itself. Am I the only one or are others like me out there?

126coupe 06-30-2011 12:47 PM

My neighbor leaves the hood open on his Camaro when he comes home from work.
Frankly I don't get it:confused:

daepp 06-30-2011 12:48 PM

I see lots of guys doing that at the track. Couldn't hurt.

vash 06-30-2011 12:51 PM

that's stupid..everyone knows hot air drops.. (read this in green text..please)

I drive mine like I stole it and put it away wet.

KNS 06-30-2011 01:42 PM

On a hot day or after a long drive I'll pop the lid.

dhrcr911s 06-30-2011 01:47 PM

Track - Yes
Around town - Rarely

yetibone 06-30-2011 02:31 PM

Sometimes I do that with my 928 to heat the garage a little in the wintertime. Makes an evening smoke less uncomfortable.

word!!!

ODDJOB UNO 06-30-2011 02:51 PM

i'd used to drive mine like i stole it.....................then i would open the hood and look for LEAKS! and COUNT THEM!..................and SIGH!

now after the rebuild behind us.........................all i care about is getting 700 miles on it ASAP, so i can adjust the valves and ge-dumpen der oil.

red-beard 06-30-2011 02:58 PM

I have a photo of 5 or 6 oveheated aircooled Porsches after waiting in line to re-cross the border.

In the spring/summer months at AX, yes lid comes up as internal temps get up there.

Sometimes after a long drive during the hottest parts of summer.

azasadny 06-30-2011 04:34 PM

I used to do that in the summer, on especially hot days after a spirited drive. I would always check the engine over and be sure nothing was broken, etc... and let the heat escape. I noticed that it cooled down quite a bit after I swapped out the CIS for Webers.

cgarr 06-30-2011 05:02 PM

Yea all you guys are going to have cracked engines from cooling too fast...

legion 06-30-2011 05:14 PM

My 951 had an electric water pump. It would continue to circulate coolant after shutting off the engine, so I didn't worry...

id10t 06-30-2011 06:04 PM

Apparently the thing to do while driving across hot desert in your 356 was to put a oil can to prop the engine lid open a tad...

A930Rocket 06-30-2011 06:43 PM

At the track, I did it after every run. At home, I just drove easy for 5-10 minutes for the turbo to cool down.

trekkor 06-30-2011 06:52 PM

914's have a mesh engine lid and mine has no engine compartment tin.

I open it to work on it ( after every run ) :(

So then I shouldn't dump a five gallon bucket O water on it? yes, gti

I open my decklid (no fan though) when I drive on really hot days ( 100 plus ) is it like shock cooling in an airplane? I didn't even think about that!

slodave 06-30-2011 11:09 PM

I doubt it in hot conditions. After you turn the engine off, the fan isn't moving anymore and the engine temp rises quite a bit really fast. I questioned my dad about the practice of cooling down the engine (turbo) in his plane. I mentioned about the sudden rise after engine shutdown. It does spike. A lot of his engine is logged and can be reviewed on a computer later.

yeah heat soak.
Now does a bag of ice on the intercooler of turbo cars really work?

rnln 06-30-2011 11:20 PM

when I first got the car, for several months, I opened the lid when I got home to see and hear the engine runs before I come in :D

I know you can harm a light airplane engine and cause cracking around injectors and such by pulling power and descending while full rich. I figured if the engine ( my 911's ) was in static air then no harm could come of it. I guess by opening the lid you increase the convective cooling flow quite a bit though.

A930Rocket 07-01-2011 12:47 AM

If you have been on the boost, then the IC will be hot. The ice will make a bag of water, but that's it. No engine cooling at all. Best to let it run a few minutes instead.

I think he was kidding....

GH85Carrera 07-01-2011 06:40 AM

I often check the oil level after I get home. The car will be parked in the same spot on a level garage floor. When I shut it off I close the lid. If it cools down in 2 hours instead of 4 what difference does it really make? At the autocross the engine never gets that hot to make a difference.

Por_sha911 07-02-2011 09:05 AM

If its really hot out or I've been running it hard I'll let the engine idle for 30 seconds in the garage. After it is shut off I'll pop the hood.

Aurel 07-02-2011 09:14 AM

Did ya notice the engine lid has a big rectangular opening on it?? I guess Porsche engineers did that for cooling purposes. When I want to cool down my house, I do not feel the need to open the screen door either ;).

pwd72s 07-02-2011 10:49 AM

I did raise the lid...under the "can't hurt-might help" theory...I do the same to my now H20 cooled cars...to keep wax melting heat off the hood...

Tobra 07-02-2011 01:35 PM

I figure it is easier on the rubber if you pop the hood, especially if you just got done getting it really hot

A930Rocket 07-02-2011 03:05 PM

Are you talking about your car or your sex life? :)

That's similar to what I do; but I'll drive the last minute or so at low load/high RPM. My thinking is that the fan speed is brought up, and the cylinders are pumping mostly air. --pumping air thru, inside and out. ...and because the car is moving, recirc is not an issue.

Just like how race cars speed up when they hit the grass ;)
