Went to a wake today for a 20 year old.

Found out this AM that the daughter of the Benz shop owner where we have our car worked on passed away last Friday. She took her own life. The wake was this afternoon and the place was packed with well wishers for Ted and Lil, her parents. They have to be the most down to earth people I know and will do anything to help you out.

I was starting to cry when I hugged them both.

Came home and hugged our kids as much as a 15 and 17 would let us.

A very sad day.

Hug your kids and tell them you love them. Nothing is worth taking your own life when you are so young.

It's a very hard thing to go through. Their lives will never be the same again. My prayers are out to them.

That is horrible for the parents. Have you heard of the reason?

Terrible stories. I have a couple of friends who have gone through this. Very, very sad. Especially when they just don't see it coming. If they only could realize how it destroys their parents.

And RIGHT THERE is part of the problem. It is that willingness to be unaware, to go through your life without knowing what the fk is going on. Especaily with your children. Is it blindness or the parents don't care enough to be involved to look at what is going on. People who ace themselves often have the feeling that no one cares about them and they don't have the tools to be able to reach out of their own isolation and despair.

Further the kid was selfish right to the end by not considering their parents feelings...before they blew their brains out.

The child and her sister were very involved with her mom and dad. It was a close family that did many things together. She was at her parents house just the night before and was her usual bubbly self. No indications of something on the horizen the next day. She would have been a junior or senior in college next fall.

My understanding is that her boyfriend broke up with her that day and in a fleeting moment, all has changed. So sad when we know as adults that this bump in the road of life is not worth worrying about, much less, taking ones own life over it.

RIP Kiki.

It doesn't take being a parent to know about being on the edge. Further I know more about why people think and do things than U ever will. Mr Froggy Pants!

Terrible story, unfortunately not a rare enough occurrence in modern life. I lost a very close friend 28 years ago under almost identical conditions, (no one saw it coming, sudden break-up of teenaged romance), it still hurts to this day. He left a huge hole in everyone else's life.

Still, I do not agree with the hackneyed explanation of suicide being selfish in all cases. If it's a housewife with small children...maybe...but depression is a powerful mental illness that removes all rational thought and logic when it's in full-swing. When someone is suicidal, they might be fully aware of the carnage they will leave behind but in such unbearable pain that they cannot stand it for another minute. The other really marked characteristic of depression is that it figuratively puts horse blinders on it's subject. Their focus of attention narrows so extremely that all they can see is schit and pain, it becomes impossible to see the bigger picture, ie. that things will change/they will not always feel this way/there could be happiness right around the corner in the near future/etc...

Depression lies to you and tells you that the way you feel now is never going to change and that life is simply pain and sadness. To continue living is to subject yourself to additional pain and rejection, financial failure and ruin, or other lovely human emotions. For people who have never experienced it and lack empathy see it as only a selfish act perpetuated on others.

Well put; counterbalances the drivel at posts 7 & 14 very nicely.

People who Ace themselves also do not want to burden others with their feelings. So they tend to hide their despair.

Apparently this "bump" in the road was thought and felt to be a big enough deal for her to kill herself. In other words even small feelings are important and are worth feeling about and resolving.

Somebody should have told the girl that nobody is worth doing that for.

Once in a while thoughts are expressed so well, written in such a way, that I read it again and again.

A930, my thoughts and prayers...while the parents may never know why, Denis' post is a first step.
