Welders: tool for grinding welds in tight areas?

I've a need to grind down some welds in fairly tight spaces. I've tried a Dremel, but it doesn't seem to have the 'oomph' I need.

Here's an example - this will get welded all the way around, and will need cleanup.

Yep, you have to use pneumatic tools with plenty of air behind it.

You can do some serious metal removel with a 4" electric grinder but any precision work needs a 1/4" straight and/or 90° die grinder. Metal burrs will take off metal fast. Followed by sanding rolls and disks. I'm not a fan of stones on a die grinder.

battery dremel or plug in?

I have a plug in one that has PLENTY of beans, if you like you can borrow it, assuming I can put my hand to it, but the air tools are the way to go

I already have a nice selection of die grinders; I might look into the baby belt sander.

I have large and small twist-loc arbors; I take a work out sanding disk and cut it down to the small arbor size, which works well for some of the smaller stuff.

I mostly use the flat and the side of a cut-off or thick wheel. Regular drill. For corners, something like this Grinding, Point, 3/16in - Rotary Tool Accessories - Finishing Tools - 3DY26 : Grainger Industrial Supply
The stones disintgrate and find their way under saftey glasses and in corners.

Don't know what that latest project is but I'll guess it will turn out sweet.

Carbide bits. They come in all shapes and sizes and I've found them the best fit for tight spots including inside corners.

4" grinder with hard disks, soft disks, flap wheels etc
Straight die grinder with thin disks, carbide burrs, stone wheels, unitized soft wheels etc
Angle die grinder with various attachments
Files
Etc......

I have all of the above and more, but for what you are doing, you might find a 1.5" expanding rubber drum type arbor with COARSE abrasive sleeves mounted to a straight die grinder useful to grind/sand off most of the high spots.

I also got a new angle grinder, a DeWalt. The baby belt sanders are good for small jobs, but that weld bead will be plenty hard.

I bought a "Fein Multimasterr" about 4 years ago to remove the grout between tiles in my bathroom. Worked perfectly.
It's fantastic, made in Austria (not cheap) and it can do jobs no other power tool can do.
It vibrates so it's very safe... Like a plaster cutter in a doctors office.

Since it's release other brands have copied it and there are now lower cost options but the "Fein" has the best range of tools and attachments.

None of these tools would allow you to grind in a veeeery tight place. Go to your local welding supply store and ask for the carbide bits. They're about $18 each. You could even grind inside a 1/4" hole if you had the urge.

They're the only tool I'd use to remove a bead such as you've shown in the pic without worrying about bitting the surround metal.
