Sitting in the Gramercy Park Hotel in NYC this April. Ordered a McCallen 12, w/ one block of ice. Had a second drink and imagine a Chicago hotel price for a drink. Bill w/o tip was $50.00. Almost choked. Could buy a bottle of McCallen 12 for under $50.

Why it's 1 ZAR = 0.1495 USD +0.00131 (0.880%)

It's still a $1367 tab, but 9 lap dances and a private booth? That dude's a perv or rich, or both.

Was in SA in 2008. I found food and drink very reasonable. I had colleagues from the UK thought it was a steal. Back in 2008, $1 US equaled .50 pence.

You could always do something crazy, like SAVE IT.

So many in our society see money only as something to spend. As if it's only a means to get stuff.

What they are mising is the real value of money, something it can buy you without actually spending it:
FREEDOM!

If you have enough money, you have freedom to do as you wish. No one owns you, no one controls you.

I could walk away from my job right this second and still not have to worry about money. I know, I've seen me do it.
I could pack up and move, just because I felt like it.
My bills would still get paid, I'd still have food on the table. i could do that because I spent the past 33 years saving money instead of blowing it.
Putting away at least 15% before taxes and usually much more than that. And now I have freedom AND money.

On the other hand, I could blow it all as fast as possible and have nothing but shallow meaningless possessions, a hang over, and have a whole bunch of creditors with their claws in my butt all fighting over my next paycheck.
No thank you.

Well said! As I've posted here before...I'm not rich, but I do have "screw you" money...able to say "screw you" to anyone. Retired at age 48 after years of saving & investing.

Financial happiness is not paying interest, rather having others pay interest to you.

I've spent most of my adult life squandering money on toys, hobbies and women, AND have nearly 100% of my time to myself. Tomorrow, I could pack up and move anywhere in the world if I wanted to. I wish I could hold seminars on how others can do the same, because it saddens me to see men work hard and get kicked around by bosses, wives, etc. while trying to save a buck or two. I don't think people realize just how short life is and how petty 99% of life is.

Sammy you are correct: A truly rich man owns time.

While we're on this, how can you spend $3-5 for one pack of cigarettes? I remember buying a carton for $5-8 (name brand). The price of lung cancer has gone way up since I smoked.

Try $9-12 in NY/NJ

I wouldn't call any of that squandering.

Well, it's opened my eyes for sure. The kids were on their first "vacation" after getting through law school, etc. They don't have lot's of money and now they've seen how the other half lives. This will be a good lesson to make them think about what's important and what's not, and booze is not one of them. I'm so glad I don't live in a big city, small town for me, for better or worse.

Listenend to Warren today out in Sun Valley...guy is worth 40B USD...he doesn't even own his own plane, he has a 1/8 time share on one that cost hima 1M a year...he gives his 3 kids 100 hours of time per year as a gift, lives in the same old Rancher in Omaha since 58 and in general is so tight that he squeaks.

Back in LA I talked to a guy on the auction circuit who had just sold his Hi Tech comapny for major bank and was living down in New Port Bch..his comment was there is no reason ever to pay retail...Now will the ultra wealth step up and pay bank for sumthin, you bet, but they will be more than likely be getting quite a deal on something or figure that whatever it is is going to go up in value.

If U meet the ultra wealthy you find out real quick that they are generally so tight that they squeak and can generally account for where every penny of their money went to.

Itis only the jerks who come into major bank that throw it around and in many cases it never lasts.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

When I worked behind the gates funny how many beat up old station wagons we saw parked in the driveway.

Nothing wrong with enjoying life with good wine and food while you're young but always pay yourself first so you can enjoy life later too. Put a few percentage of each check in a 401K when you start and up that with every raise, you won't even notice it's gone from the check.
